I am beyond horrified with this doctor. She really represents a lot of what’s wrong with healthcare these days. She prides herself on finding “malingerers”, which considering her job and lack of beds, I understand is necessary, but she’s incredibly rude about it and thinks it makes her look ‘cool’ and ‘tough’. She’s overly concerned with looking cool and like one of the boys when the cops and EMTS are around, to the point of doing an anal cavity search for a razorblade without any lube - something I’m sure is incredibly painful for the patient.

She also drops mentions here and there of other… hmmmm. Unethical things. Towards the end, she lies to a patient about what drug they’re getting just to shut him up. She ‘uses her wiles’ (ie, her sexuality/flirting) while talking with patients which is incredibly uncomfortable to read about.

Speaking of using her wiles, she talks continually about how she flirts EXCESSIVELY with other doctors and nurses even though she’s married and has a kid. Like, I understand that getting married doesn’t turn off your eyeballs and joking around but she’s definitely not joking around.

What made me incredibly pissed was towards the end, a transgender woman was brought in by the cops and she made a point of saying something along the lines of how you should use their preferred pronouns to make it seem like you’re on their side, and then a) used male pronouns off and on throughout the story and b) after sedating the patient she went back to the nurses station and called her a “shemale”. I almost threw up in my mouth what the fuck.

Throughout, she’s in therapy to try to make herself a better person and doctor and she does, in fact, become slightly better as far as I can tell, but that’s really not saying much. She’s still abrasive, combative, and frankly not someone I would trust with my dog, let alone with a person in dire circumstances like when they go to Bellevue psych ward.

She’s also an incredibly shitty friend. Her mentor had cancer and she backs away and never visits her in the hospital. A friend at the hospital lost their child, and she looked away and pretended she didn’t see him.

Overall, this book just seemed like a list of Dr Holland’s unethical practices at Bellevue and was a really uncomfortable read. If I could report her to the medical board I would. I sincerely hope she’s no longer practicing medicine.
