I really hate this book. I also hate "Petals on The Wind", "If There Be Thorns" and "Seeds of Yesterday". I say this having just re-read each of the above 17 years after I first read them (they were heady stuff to a 12 year old), and I was appalled at the predictability of the plot, the characters, the obsession Virgina Andrews appeared to harbour for incestuous relationships.
I hate the fact that characters are so stereotypically physically stunning, but must shoulder a terrible tragic burden. I hate the dialogue used. Awful. Simply awful.

Wow. I can't believe you read ALL those again. If the first one was crap, why keep going? I know you read way faster than me, but that still sounds like an utter waste of time. I haven't read them in 16 years. I only read the first two. I could tell "If There Be Thorns" was boring even then.

You need to revisit these. I re-read all of them because I went to the trouble of purchasing all of them. As you once said, it would be like throwing good money after bad but I figured even if I hated them, they would keep me amused. They reminded me of why David Malouf is a wordsmith and Virginia Andrews a hack.
A really competitive price. I could've picked up one for $8 (which, as it turned out was excessive, they should have paid me) or all 4. It seemed to make sense financially. If I had've known it would have cost me valuable time and patience, I wouldn't have bothered. But you know, good money after bad....
Well, consider this. The Dollanganger series was the ONLY series fully written by VC Andrews, so other books under her name are by ghostwriters, who recycle plots from her other books. Of course they're all similar. I personally hate the ghostwriter series.
I read this book many, many years ago and started collecting VCR Andrews books and they all got destroyed in a flood. Also, did anyone read "Garden of Shadows" which was actually the beginning of the Dollanger story.
I'm fairly certain that the prequel, "Garden Of Shadows" was written mostly by the ghostwriter, Andrew Neiderman. There are many inconsistencies, such as Corrine's name being spelled differently, to name just one. It's one of his better attempts in terms of writing sequels or prequels to V.C. Andrews' existing work, but there's a lot about that doesn't make sense compared to the other books in the series.
