really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy, fantasy-ya-yr

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be adult or teen fantasy, and I don't really care. It's just plain good. Yelena, sentenced to die, is offered the chance to live as the Commander's taster. She could be poisoned at any moment, and if she tries to escape, she could die of the poison given to her at her first meeting with the Commander's chief of intelligence (he gives her the antidote daily). When she accepts, she is pitchforked into a world where she cannot tell who is an ally and who is an enemy, where she trains daily to gain the skills that will help her to survive her personal enemies, and where she must peel back her own layers to learn who she is, and what she is capable of.

Now I see why so many of my reading friends were recommending this book to me. It was good enough that I plowed through it in two days (okay, I had to break for sleep and company), and now I want to get my hands on the next books. Yelena and her master are great characters, as are the warriors who befriend Yelena, and the vengeful ghost of the sadistic young aristocrat who she killed.

Megan Such great characters! Just wait until you meet the horse in Magic Study. :0) I have the next two, if you like.

Tamora Pierce I was planning to get my own copies--I think these are going to be keepers! And I wouldn't want to answer for your copies while I'm on the road!

Michele What puzzled me was when I went to the book store to purchase the second book I found it in the romance department. These books are not romances in my opinion.

Cynthia Armistead Newman Somebody definitely misshelved it! They are marvelous, and definitely NOT romances. I'm looking forward to her next series.

Not really, but they are published by Luna, which is a divison of Harlequin, so that's probably why they were there.

Teno Q. Unfortunately, Yelena started out alright but became more and more of a MarySue as the series went on. I don't even want to list the reasons why..

Holly L if you like this, read Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo - SUCH a good new book and new author

Holly L for fans of Tamora Pierce and Maria Snyder, that is :)

Cynthia Armistead Newman Shadow and Bone is going on my list!

Elias I was wondering the same thing myself (is it YA or adult?). I can't find this book anywhere, but I HAVE to read it. None of the bookstores near me carry it! But when I find it, I will buy it and read it immediately! If impossible-to-please Tamora Pierce likes it, I've GOT to read it!

Dantryi I found this book in a thrift store when I was shopping with my mother in law. Loved the blurb so I got and could not put it down till I finished it. I love how it was played out can't wait to find the next book.

Pauline I just finished the first 3 books and have to say I'm actually disappointed. Mostly because I spent the whole time comparing them to your books, and they came up short. The story had a lot of potential, but I don't think it was reached. Which meant I kept waiting for the book to turn into something more and, when that didn't happen, I was left with a bit of a sour taste.

I think I'll have to reread Beka's books to feel positive again ;)
