Dream (Inescapable, #2)

Few authors can write hurt/comfort like A.M. Rose and Dream only confirms that. It's definitely a sweet, heart-warming love story with lots of cuddly moments and a well-deserved HEA. But first and foremost, it's a beautifully written story of healing, a heart-wrenching, time-consuming, painful journey, full of small victories mixed with unavoidable setbacks which Levi must go through before he's ready to even consider any kind of relationship.
What I love about this book is the fact that there are no easy solutions, no shortcuts, no 'love is a magic fix for everything' nonsense. While Arne would love nothing more than to ride to the rescue and fix all of Levi's problems, he does understand that what Levi actually needs is time and space to work through his pain and trauma. He doesn't want to fix Levi because he doesn't consider him broken, he just wants to support him while Levi slowly and painfully deals with his trauma, gets more confident, builds back his self worth. As a result, their relationship moves very slowly, with little to no heat, but there's a lot of love and affection in small, intimate gestures which clearly show how much they care for each other, and their HEA, though hard-won, feels natural and very satisfying.
As much as I tend to drift toward plot-driven books, I do enjoy stories like Dream, with interesting characters built strongly enough to make me want to stick around and watch them grow. Here it's true for the protagonists, but the same goes for the side characters: quirky, loveable, and well-developed, each with their own story too, which is why I have very high hopes for the sequel yet again. It'll be fun to see the super serious and competent but a bit absent-minded Doc get blown away by Hurricane Bailey.
Personally, I still would have liked to see this world explored further, to know more about Kriila society as a whole, but I enjoyed finding lots of small, new details scattered throughout the book, which add depth and context to personal worlds and lives of Kriila characters. All in all, it’s a great read for fans of slow burn fantasy romance.
