A friend bought this book for me for my birthday because she knows of my predilection for interesting facts. However, I had a hard time getting into this book. I don't mean to sound unthankful, and I don't want to say it because she just got this for me with the hope that I'd enjoy it, but I sort of found it boring. I also had a hard time envisioning all the experiments he did. However, I did find some of the facts interesting, and I would very much like to try some of the experiments one day myself.

Ikr! I didn't even know such a book existed until my friend gave this to me! 😂

oh dearrrrrrrrr!! what was the reasoning of your friend for giving you this, again? 😅

Apparently she knew I liked fun facts.... And she's never read the book herself. "Oooh! Candles! They smell nice. This book's probably great!"

I don't want to sound spoiled, but that book....😅
It was really nice of her, though. I know it was hard for her to find a book in English here, so I'm really thankful for her.

Ohhhh, got it! How difficult exactly is it to get an English book in Japan? Like do any public libraries have English books? I know the Chinese school my sisters attended were working hard to build a library full of books in Chinese, but it must be kind of the opposite in Japan!

I get you, though! Chemistry class last year for me was... iffy... I wish I could've been all over it and the teacher was amazing, but I just couldn't get into it!

It's funny. The public libraries and bookstores have books to learn English and English picture books, but they don't have like novels and stuff. I bet if you actually go into the heart of Tokyo, though, there are a lot of stores that have. We live more on the outskirts of the city and have less options.

Ik, I can never get into chemistry too! I just blank out and start to imagine myself in Gondolin or Rivendell or something!! XD

Oh wow, that's sooo weird! So are there any English books that you really wish you could read but you can't?

😂😂 I only wish for Rivendell when I'm very stressed. Gondolin I think about like 24/7. Jk, jk 😂

Haha, like, every time I see a new, interesting book come out I'm like, "Give me that!!!" So I guess you can say I have a lot? XD I would really like to read all of Tolkien's books one day, though. I've mostly listened to the audiobooks from online, which isn't bad, but there's just something about the feel and smell of a book in your hands, yk? 😁

😂 I so wish I could lay eyes on that beautiful city!

Ah, true! I have like a million books I want to read 😂 I just wish I had the ability to read like super, duper fast, and get through a book a day or something 😂😂

I get that! Sometimes I print ebooks off, like for school, but also just for me, so that might kinda work? I think if I only read Tolkien for an entire year, it would take me that long to read all his work. He's got a lot of stuff! *totally not the twelve History of Middle-earth books haunting my dreams* 😅

Ooh! Btw! Speaking of Gondolin, have you read The Fall of Gondolin yet? 🤩🤩

So true! I so wish I could just take a whole year off for just reading!

Oh, sometimes I print ebooks too! When I have time, I sometimes sew the pages together to make it more like a book.
The History of Middle-Earth is on my bucket list!!

Yes, I have!! I finished it a little while back. It was so good!! I've been meaning to write a review, but I just can't seem to find the right words...

Ooh! How does that work? You just literally sew them together? I don't even know how to sew 😳😅

Yeah, I just really wanna read Morgoth's Ring because it's got a lot of cool facts about Elves in that one 😂

Woww, you read sooo fast!! How do you do that?! I'm still like only 1/3 of the way through Beren and Luthien lol

Ella あいみ M. I fold stacks of papers in half then punch holes through them. Then I just sew em together.
I've been sewing my own journals and stuff together for a few years now. It's a lot of work, but it's satisfying in the end. I can send you a YT tutorial if you want.

Ooh, yes. Morgoth's Ring would probably be super interesting.

Nah, I'm not that fast, actually. I think I just seem to read fast because I only read one book at a time. Some people read like 20 books at the same time, but I don't really like doing that because all the stories get mixed up in my head. So I usually just focus on finishing one book before I start another (with the exception of the Bible).

Oh, that really is cool! I would love to try, but I can't rn 😔

Haha are you calling me out there with the 20 books thing? 😂😂😂 You do end up reading faster than me tho! I know Goodreads says I'm reading like... 20 books... but it's really only one or two fiction reads at once! Narnia rn as a read-aloud, and then something else on my own time.

Also, which of the three Great Tales was your favorite? The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, or The Fall of Gondolin? I think my opinion of The Children of Hurin changed a bit on my reread, so I've really got to finish rereading the other two, too!

Ella あいみ M. Oh, No!! I wasn't! Sorry, I just randomly pulled out a number from the top of my head. But everyone has their different ways of reading, and it's not wrong or anything. I was just saying that I read one at a time.

Ahh, that's hard. I really liked The Children of Húrin, but I think I might like The Fall of Gondolin the best. Especially because Tolkien never finished it, it just makes me want to read the rest so bad!!

Hahaha don't worry, I'm not reading 20. I'm reading 22 😉 (But, yeah, I know. I think we just have different styles of reading 😊)

Ooh, yes!!! I used to rank it 1) The Children of Húrin, 2) The Fall of Gondolin, and 3) Beren and Lúthien, but remembering how beautiful The Fall of Gondolin was, I can't decide now! Beren and Lúthien's first version was so funny though hehe

Ella あいみ M. 22?! Wow. Ambitious. 😄

Yeah, I should probably do a reread of Beren and Lúthien. It's been a while. I did enjoy the start, but I barely remember the rest.

Aw, dang it! The first version is like a fairy-tale! 🏰

But yeah, I'm a little obsessed with Gondolin 😅

Ella あいみ M. I know. I was so sad when it got destroyed. I will forever hate Maeglin for what he did!

Lily Ella wrote: "I know. I was so sad when it got destroyed. I will forever hate Maeglin for what he did!"

IKR! And Morgoth! And the balrogs! But mostly Maeglin! Do you hate him more tho or Eöl? Because somehow I remember despising Eöl even more than Maeglin and idek how that's possible! XD

Ella あいみ M. Ahhh! I hate both!! If Eöl hadn't married Aredhel, then Maeglin wouldn't have been born. But I just HATED Maeglin in The Fall of Gondolin!!!!
Though, I didn't like Aredhel either. That whole family was so annoying and frustrating.

LOL true! XD Yeah, they got problems!! xD

Oh! This is really random, but speaking of Eöl and Aredhel and Maeglin (and Celegorm, apparently...) there's a REALLY well-written fan fiction. It takes a really strange stance (as you shall see if you read it), but would you be interested in reading it? I promise it's really good! And I'd love to know your thoughts on it!

Ella あいみ M. Ooh, I'd love to! It sounds really interesting. How long is it, though? Unfortunately, I don't exactly have the time to read, per se. I've only been doing audiobooks recently because I can listen to it while I work and stuff. But if you send it to me, I'll eventually get around to reading it! (Hopefully)

message 25: by Lily (new)

Lily Oh! I'll send you the one about Maeglin! It's a one-shot, so it's not long at all! (I know the Thranduil one was suppperrrrr long xD). And she's got some other writings, too, that's a series and slightly longer, but you just try out the Maeglin one and see if you like her style of writing!

message 26: by Lily (new)

Lily Okay, I haven't read it in awhile, but I'll try to along with you :) It's called The Breach in the Walls and it's on Stories of Arda under the pen name "Ecthelion of the fountain." (I can't send links through comments, unfortunately.)

Ella あいみ M. Yeah, that Thranduil one was long. But it was really great!

Ooh, it does look interesting! And it's short, too! XD
Maybe I can read it sometime next week. Thanks!
