really liked it
bookshelves: completed-series, fantasy

Castle of Wizardry is the fourth out of five books in the Belgariad series by David Eddings. I think I enjoyed this slightly more than the previous books, although I’m still sticking with a four-star rating.

This series is full of traveling, and this book had some of that too, but I enjoyed that the characters stayed in one place more. Events that readers have been waiting to see happen since the first book finally started happening too, so it was fun to see that. As with all of the books so far, I chuckled several times at the character banter, although I’m not sure if it was more or less than the other books. It seemed like a little bit more.

I’m not a big fan of the prophecy trope. That’s been present in the whole series but was more explicit in this book. I especially dislike it when it’s implied that people and events are being manipulated by a higher power to bring about the desired prophesied events. I feel like it cheapens the characters’ actions a bit if everything they do was fated to happen anyway.

I’m a little confused why (view spoiler).

One more book to go!

Michelle I'm glad that you didn't waste your money on this series!

YouKneeK Thanks Michelle, me too! It was especially worth it at the $3 per book they were on sale for.

I’ve had a much higher than usual number of slow (to me) books lately, but this series has been a fun and pretty fast read.

Elentarri Well, if that's your conclusion about Relg, the last book will be surprising.

YouKneeK Hi Elentarri, thanks for taking time to visit. "Conclusion” seems like an awfully strong word for what’s in my spoiler tag. A conclusion about a character would, in my opinion, encompass more than one small aspect of that character and would be made after the end of the series.

It was intended as speculation about the other character mentioned in my spoiler tag, about whether or not I misread that person’s identity, which I was starting to realize might be possible, and to note something I was looking forward to finding out in the last book.

Please don’t let me know the answer, or even hint about it; I hate spoilers. However, if there’s a surprise, that’s usually good. Especially in a series as predictable (but fun) as this one.

Elentarri Hehehehe....
