I feel silly expressing this opinion about a well-known and revered classic of the noir genre--a genre that is all about sex and violence and amorality mixed together in the most disturbing combination possible--but this book was too much for me.

Just way too ugly.

Jodi You shouldn't feel silly for being honest, Lark. Although it may be 'classic', it's certainly not for everyone.

I'm enjoying my Jim Thompson #2, Savage Night. The discomfort I have with The Killer Inside Me has to do with its open celebration of sadism. There is no gray area in the protagonist's brain--he loves being bad. In some way that seems to contradict the moral dilemmas that other noir books are defined by, books I love a lot--like They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Josh Stay away from Pop 1280 as to me, it's like a sister book to 'The Killer Inside Me'. 'The Grifters' is less ugly and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
