Winter of the World

A little disappointed by this volume ... Too much romance, hard-to-believe coincidences and twists and turns. I suppose Part One of the trilogy would suffice ... Most characters act unnaturally or unbelieveably, and at times it feels like Mr Follet struggles to connect the loose ends.
I survived despite the book being rather long, mainly to John Lee, the narrator, who in my opinion found it challenging to keep the straight face.
This is a good book but definitely not a masterpiece and I will not bother with Part Three.

I gave up on Follett for just the reasons you give. There are too many great ones to read to waste time on mediocre.

Nice review Beata. Shame you didn’t get on with this one. His book always seem overly long, it just puts me off tackling them 🤔
Sorry this one didn't live up to the first, Beata. I can understand you not continuing the series after this. Better luck with your next book, my friend!
I feel your pain, Beata. I’m plodding through one right now, although mine is full of interesting info.
They can't all be winners 🤷. It's a good way to start the year, Beata, as from now on, books will just get better :))

Thank you, Sandra :)) Length is not a problem for me, I want something more with regard to character development ...

Thank you, Judith :)) As for history, I like the moments he chose for his characters, it's their much, much complicated relations, often romantic, I didn't enjoy .. Too much of a good thing, I'd say ...

Thank you, Orhan :)) So true, My Friend! I like it when unexpected reads win lol :))

Sorry this didn't stack up, Beata! "Pillars of the Earth" was my first 'major' Follett after a couple of his earlier 'regular-sized' novels, and I loved it! Read it once before joining GR then listened to audio. I have the other three "Kingsbridge" books, but I am yet to even think about listening to one of them!
Thank you, Terence :)) I also enjoyed Pillars ... and I'm planning to listen to Book2, with John Lee's interpretation :) I liked Fall of the Giants more ..
Beata, I came upon this by chance, as my notifications seemed to seize up around Christmastime. I loved your comment about the narrator! As usual you rise above the author in your review, in the nicest possible way!

Thank you, Jeanne :)) I like John Lee, and I think he's read all parts of both trilogies. He always does a grand effort :) As for the book, it was OK, somehow, left be indifferent which is never what I want from a book :) Hope you're safe and well, My Dear Friend :))

Such a pity, Beata. I haven't read this one yet but considering the length and your thoughts on it, I think I'll leave as a lower priority. Wonderful review.
Good review— sometimes bug books are just overstuffed. I barely got through Part 1 and knew I’d stop there despite really liking other Follett books.
Fantastic review, Beata! Sorry you didn't love this, but I am so glad that you survived reading this, lol!

Thank you, Meredith :)) I did, fortunately, lol! :))

Kudos to you, Beata, for finishing this massive tome when you weren’t really enjoying it. That’s commitment!

Hi Beata, I am well, thanks, but Covid has finally got here! We couldn't escape it for ever . . . you stay well, too.

I didn't get hooked on it, wanted to finish it though, Barbara ... I was rather interested in the events the characters were involved in :)) that speaks volume to me about the book ..
