A Sky Beyond the Storm (An Ember in the Ashes, #4)

im so very torn with this.
the phenomenal writing, character narrative, and entire atmosphere of this book is easily worth 4+ stars. ST has grown remarkably as a writer, and, strictly from an objective storytelling point of view, this is probably the best book in the series. its very much a satisfying and appropriate conclusion to the story considering the events of the previous book.
however, ‘a reaper at the gates’ was an instant mood changer for me regarding this series. my mind still fails to grasp that the characters from books 3-4 are the same characters i fell in love with in books 1-2. and i think its mainly because the story took a direction i did not fully support/enjoy, and so my relationship with the characters changed.
so im feeling a little detached from this final installment, which is what i predicted would happen. again, this is a fantastic book and does the plot justice, but im still just personally not the biggest fan of said plot. i wanted more for my characters, but i get why everything works out the way it does. i have no doubt that lovers of the series will be very happy with this conclusion.

such a good idea! i think you will enjoy it so much more than those of us who had to wait years between each book. :P
This is such a push and pull series for me.... I desperately wanted to jump on the bandwagon, but I DNFed AEitA. Is is worth trying to read it again??
I couldn’t finish it. I ended up DNFing. Hopefully I’ll pick up again after Xmas but it was kinda disappointing to me.
Oh my gosh, I would really love to hear all your thoughts. I might message you 🤣. I ADORED the first book, read it multiple times and loved loved loved, but during the second one I felt like what you said about, that the characters started to change in ways I didn’t like. I actually ended up DNFing the third book because it was just... so depressing and I grew to really dislike the characters. They were so different from the start 😭.
Same. So far I tried reading book 3 so many times because I really liked 1&2, but I keep feeling like I'm reading of other characters and not the original ones.
I just finished Sky and I still think Book 1 is the best one out of the series. The quality decreases after imo.
I haven’t read the 4th one yet (I will) but I agree that they kinda seem to each go downhill! Loved #1! # 2 was still good but no where near #1... and I had to PUSH to get through #3! I really hated where she went with Elias’s story...
Oh no! I'm asking for the series for Christmas. I'm a little nervous bc I've read mixed reviews on the last book
amanda - oh no! honestly, if you couldnt make it through 'an ember in the ashes' (which i think is the best book of the series, story and character wise), then you probably wont enjoy the rest of the series. :/
madison - yeah, i can totally understand that. good luck if you decide to give it a second chance!
hayley - sounds like you and me are the same person! hahaha.
vanessa - yes! thank you. so glad im not the only person who feels this way!
salma - i completely agree! 100%!
danielle - elias' character is completely ruined for me after book #2. and with how things end in this book, im not even sure what the point was. its just disappointing how his character is handled. he deserves so much better.
cale - i know many people who found this final book emotional, in a good way. pretty sure im in the minority, so maybe you will enjoy the series!

Thanks! I heard from people that the characters change and became unlikable so I'm reading with the expectation of feeling the same. Although I've heard that everyone seems to love Helene 😅
cale - yuppp, thats pretty much the problem i had with the series. so maybe go into reading this with the idea of not getting too attached to the characters. :P
salma - that is a VERY accurate description. lol.

By the end of the series I was only reading for Helene. And then her arc was handled so, so badly at the very end of Sky it all felt pointless. Super disappointing conclusion to a series that I had mostly loved up until the last book.
yesss! i was never really a fan of helene, but wow. i was upset by how much the poor girl went through in this. it really didnt seem fair at all.
Great review! I'm feeling the same way with the last two books I loved the first one but was iffy with the third now have book four it's still good I'm just a little lost!
Still reading it. I have grown to like Helene a lot now but Laia makes me want to rip my own hair out.
I agree. I really didn’t like where she went with Elias’ plot in Reaper or how much shit she has out Helene through as a whole. She’s getting the worst out of all the characters and it’s almost getting unrealistic how much terrible shit happens to her. I also hate that because she’s my favourite character! I love this book som ich so far and I’m 100% on track to give it 5 stars but I still hate how much she’s HURTING THESE CHARACTERS.
