Fuck yeah, Grandma!

description

I like Duncan, don't get me wrong. But Bridgette is a BOSS.
She saves the day again and again with no-nonsense & zero tolerance for any bullshit. I feel for her, I really do. Duncan is so idealistic and determined to do the right thing, but Bridgette has been there, done that, and knows that you have to break a few eggs to make the damn omelet.

description

This time around they're fighting a new story.
Well, they're actually fighting one of the oldest stories - Beowulf. Which means they'll also have to go up against Beowulf's monsters, Grindel and his dear mother.
Ye olde helicopter parent...

description

*dramatic pause*
Ok, ok. But the best part of the story is the bloodbath at Bridgette's retirement home when she takes a chainsaw to some bitches and goes all vvvvvvvvrrrrrrr!!!!

description

Anyway, as they find new ways to defeat these monsters, they change the stories and maybe, more importantly, their role in the stories. I'm not even 100% sure what that means, but I know it means something.

description

This is just a neat concept with cool characters, and if you haven't checked it out yet you really don't know what you're missing.

Clint I loved Bridgette with the chainsaw!

Anne She has some awesome panels, didn't she?!

Dave You are tearing up Boom!

And Boom! seems to be doing right by you.

I love, love, love seeing well reviewed comics from the non-mainstream publishers. (And sorry, Image...you are mainstream, but I heart you still.)

Boom! is home to Irredeemable....from which The Boys series on Prime shamelessly borrows.

I don’t think fantasy is really your thing but have you tried The Spire from Boom!?

And if you enjoy Gillen, maybe Die?

Clint (Seconding The Spire recommendation.)

Anne I haven't heard of either of those! I'm more than willing to check them out, though. I just finished Klaus, and that one was fantasy-ish. So was The Sword. <--kinda?
I was thinking the same thing about BOOM! recently. They've become quite the powerhouse lately when it comes to new comics.

Anne Clint wrote: "(Seconding The Spire recommendation.)"

The Spire?

Anne Hoopla has it, if so.

Clint Yep, and that’s where I read it too :)

message 9: by Dave (new)

Dave Most of Boom!’s catalogue consists of movie/TV/book adaptations which...other than Star Wars because it’s Star Wars and there are X-Wings...I avoid. Maybe unfairly.

Their original, non-licensed properties are great. Right up there with Aftershock.

The Sword (Luna brothers?) is urban fantasy, I guess. Been a while since I read it. I think you liked Birthright, too, which was a mix of high and urban fantasy.

Die is a homage to that old Saturday morning cartoon of Dungeons & Dragons, only a bit more dark. Actually, a lot darker.

The Spire reminds me of Thundarr.

I’m always nostalgic before Christmas. We may never see something this entertaining again in our lifetimes...

Yes, Luna Bros did The Sword. Other than the art, that one looks like a keeper for me.
I've added The Spire to my list and should be able to get to it by next month. Die sound good, but I need a link!

message 13: by Dave (new)

Dave I struggle with the Luna brothers. Cool story concepts, but generally uneven story execution. The Sword is really good. Girls has its moments, Ultra may be my favorite of theirs. The Boys (very) lite. The art can be fantastic...especially splash pages...or...I don’t know. Almost like the perspective is wrong. Very flat. No depth.

Die, Vol. 1: Fantasy Heartbreaker

Die, Vol. 2: Split the Party

Roll 1d20 to see if you avoid the trap. Oh no! Roll 1d8 for damage taken.

message 14: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I'm looking at the reviews for Die and it is incredibly split between people who loved it and people who thought it was terrible. I'm interested to see where I come out on that.

message 15: by Dave (new)

Dave I usually wait to read reviews until after I finish a book/comic.

I may look at stars when trying to decide to spend my money on an unknown.

We enjoy some of the same comics and books (Descender and Red Rising trilogy), and couldn’t be further apart on others.

I will always try something recommended to me and rarely have I been disappointed

In this case, I don’t know if I am recommending Die as much as I am recommending Gillen. I read the first volume of Die. Not my favourite of his, but not bad. A solid three stars. Like Hickman, Gillen can be very dense and the plot can suffer for it.

If you fall asleep reading it and slobber on your iPad and return to other, more interesting reads, I would completely understand.

The premise intrigued the 7th grade nerd trapped inside me.

I hope Christmas is treating you and your family well. A ton of snow here.

message 16: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne It's cold here! But no snow. We're going to go see WW84 in a bit!

message 17: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I'll get around to Die. I'm interested now.

Dave Don’t forget the punching and face laughing. :)

I hope that poorly conceived rendition of “Imagine” doesn’t creep into your mind (especially since I just reminded you of it).

Enjoy!

I think it will be a great movie to enjoy with your family.

When my sons return, I will go see it. Very excited. I miss the movies. There have been so few.

The new Pixar is out on Disney+ today. :)

Merry Christmas. Peace on earth (except for the guy that just got gut kicked for trying to shoot our favourite Amazonian princess...he deserves it...he should know better).

I am (re)reading Johns’ Aquaman after just finishing his run on Green Lantern. Both your recommendations.

message 19: by Dave (new)

Dave No hurry on Die.

There are SO many good and great stories/comics out there.

A wonderful time to be alive.

Stay warm. Enjoy the movie. No spoilers, please. I’m curious as to who will be the antagonists. Some have suggested that dude she killed in the comics which then forced her self-exile to the Buddhist sanctuary during 52. Others have mentioned Cheetah. :)

I’m hoping for Egg Fu (who made a comeback in 52 with just a tad more cultural sensitivity)...

“I kicked Ares’ butt in the first movie. Now, I want an omelette. With cheese. Lots of cheese. And BacO bits.”

*laugh*

Very shocking. How big is that omnibus? Hernia inducing?

I am enjoying everything New 52. Very late to the party, but I went through a very anti-DC and anti-Marvel phase. I think if you take 2-3 years off from their silly continuities every decade or so then coming back feels quite pleasant.

“Day six of self-quarantine. I gotta say these past few days got me feeling a bit philosophical. You know this virus affected the entire world. Everyone [editor’s note: everyone except our cousins living on Mars...virus is strictly earthbound]. We’re all in this together.”

You are welcome. :)

message 25: by Dave (last edited Dec 26, 2020 09:06AM) (new)

Dave Uh oh.

Either the cast did reprise “Imagine” in glorious monotone or there was no Egg Fu to befuddle our Amelican blains. (Ooh...that is so tellible.)

I will spend my money on Comixology then. Saving is pointless. None of us will survive the pandemic.

And, uh, that’s a pretty big spoiler.

I will still have to go. My son loves Wonder Woman. And I will also have to buy it for him when it comes to home media since it won’t be on Netflix or Disney+. At least now I can dread the experience before then suffer through it.

Melly Chlistmas!

Forsooth you should have watched Soul. :)

My son loves WW, too. We cringe-faced through the whole thing together. It was a bonding experience!

message 27: by Dave (new)

Dave Well...the first trailer remains one of the greatest trailers ever. Maybe I will pop some corn and the younger son and I can watch that. Less time (and money) wasted.

Chris Pine is adorable. We can forgive him a faux pas.

Gal Gadot should probably focus on her music career or write a book of philosophy: “The Fine and Subtle Art of Condescension.”

Have you seen this fantasy comic? (Never mind...I see that you have read and reviewed...Boom!)

Critical Role – Vox Machina: Origins

As soon as I finish Aquaman...I got stuck on the panel with Mera and Ya’wara wrasslin’...

message 28: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Chris Pine was really good in the movie, so there's that.

There's a vol 2 to that Critial Role comic that I'm going to get here in a bit from Hoopla. Just waiting for my new borrows to come in next month!

message 29: by Dave (last edited Jan 12, 2021 04:50PM) (new)

Dave Chris Pine is right up there with Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth as men who could seduce me with a wink.

Hoopla has a monthly borrow limit? And your library has to have what you want to read? Sounds constricting...

I am on Comixology going through their end of year sales. I came across Critical Roles and it reminded me of this thread. Both volumes are going in the cart. I am nostalgic for my nerdy D&D days.

message 30: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Hoopla has a monthly borrow limit? And your library has to have what you want to read? Sounds constricting...

No, Hoopla is separate from what my library has in stock. The libraries pay for each patron to have access to what Hoopla has in their digital library. I think the pay $2.50 ish per borrow? That's why the larger libraries allow more borrows per month. Mine has 10 per month which is a lot more than most.

message 31: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Chris Pine is right up there with Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt and Chris Hemsworth as men who could seduce me with a wink.

For me Hemsworth is the only truly attractive guy in that bunch. I like all the other actors, though. Can't say I'd drool over them, but they are all very much worth watching. And Pine earned his paycheck in this one.

message 32: by Dave (new)

Dave $2.50 per borrow???

I guess that’s the advantage of everyone supporting the library with local taxes and then a very small percentage of the everybody actually enjoying the benefit.

Hoopla is making out like a bandit. As are the media producers who license material to Hoopla.

Free to you.

I just bought both volumes of Critical Roles for about $10. More than I would normally pay, but it’s Christmas and there’s a pandemic and we’re all going to die before the credit card bill is due. Aren’t we? That’s why I am not a financial consultant.

message 33: by Dave (new)

Dave I don’t drool (a lot) either. I have my pride. No, no I don’t.

Now that I learned from you what I inspired you to search, I am hoping that one of them and me have mutually attractive scents.

Hemsworth is a tall drink of water. Funny, too. Down to earth. Aussie accent. I wonder about the dingleberries...

message 34: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Hoopla has definitely been a lifesaver since most libraries shut down for a while. I was happy I had digital access to all of that stuff.

L. McCoy Anne wrote: "OMG. SAVE YOUR MONEY. Rent WW84 when it comes out on blu-ray. That's all the spoilers I'll give you."

HBOMax. They put all of WB’s theatrical releases up for free for a month and you get a shit ton of other stuff (all of HBO’s originals, all of the movies available on HBO, South Park, piles of DC content both animated and live action, a wide selection from Cartoon Network and Adultswim, hell they’re even adding some Cinemax content such as Warrior and that’s just some highlights... just all kinds of stuff that makes it my current favorite streaming service. Saw WW84 for free the day it came out on there and supposedly I’ll be getting free access to stuff including blockbuster releases such as The Conjuring 3, The Matrix 4, Sherlock Holmes 3, The Suicide Squad and Mortal Kombat... highly recommend it, really worth the money).

message 36: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I've already got 4 streaming services, so I'll probably have to skip that one. But it does sound like a good deal!

message 37: by L. (last edited Jan 11, 2021 10:24AM) (new)

L. McCoy Figured I’d let ya know. The $15 for a month does beat $10 (or something like that) a ticket +snacks, gas, not being able to pause for the restroom and having to wear a mask next time WB is releasing something that you guys would wanna go see!
Honestly I kinda like this on-demand and streaming thing!

message 38: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I agree that HBO would be a good deal for some people. There's nothing really on HBO (so far) that I can't live without, though. IF a movie is that high on my can't wait to see it list (and those movies are few and far between), then I would rather see it on the big screen. And DC has done such a shitty job with 90% of their movies, that the only way to not feel disappointed with them is to rent them at Redbox for $2.
I feel like it would be a better deal (for me) to stick with Disney+ and get the new Marvel content from them that has a far better track record.

Matrix 4? The last 2 movies were shit, so why do I want a 4th?
Sherlock Holmes 3? There was a 2? The first one was just kind of ok. Was anyone asking for more of that or are they just riding the RDJ high?
Conjuring 3 will be a Redbox rental, and only if my youngest wants to see it.
Mortal Kombat? I'll rent it. Maybe. If the reviews are good.
Suicide Squad I'll see in the theater and ONLY because of James Gunn. If that one sucks, it will be the last time I waste my money on a DC movie.

message 39: by L. (new)

L. McCoy Suppose that makes sense. I actually haven’t bothered with Disney+ because it doesn’t interest me. Yeah I’ll probably buy a month or so of it to check out The Mandolorian and WandaVision sometime soon but it’s far from a priority.
My mom is excited for Matrix 4 and my dad and I enjoy those films well enough (though the sequels aren’t as good, I’ll agree).
We loved the first 2 RDJ Sherlock Holmes films at our house so we’re definitely looking forward to that.
For Conjuring 3, pre-COVID my one friend and I were going to see new horror movies all the time, it’s one of the main genres that got me into the theater. Being into the Conjuring universe (I even have a Funko Pop Annabelle that slightly freaks some people out) I was disappointed when it was delayed in 2020, it was one of my most anticipated. I’m happy that we’ll get it in 2021 (along with Halloween Kills and Scream 5 but I’ll probably have to pay to see both of those).
Mortal Kombat- My dad will likely have nostalgia for the original game and older films, I’ll likely be excited by the gory live action fatalities (they’re not toning it down to a PG-13 this time).
Suicide Squad- I actually liked the 2016 one even though most people seemed to hate it (though admittedly there were a few problems), it looks like a good cast and I think James Gunn is a great director so I think that one is a very safe bet.
Then again I do have a feeling our families might have different tastes in film so it is understandable.

message 40: by Dave (last edited Jan 13, 2021 05:21AM) (new)

Dave For the most part, I agree with your very candid assessment of (some of) the movies on HBOMax.

However...

Time Warner owns Turner Networks so there is all of the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim content, Turner Classic Movies (not everyone’s thing, but I enjoy...my wife just introduced me to Rossellini...incredibly lugubrious), the entire Studio Ghibli catalogue (another bit of incredible entertainment my wife showed me) and some great HBO series (I may finally watch Game of Thrones and Westworld).

Lord of the Rings AND The Hobbit trilogies.

And, for me, best of all...animated Batman from the 90s!

You can torture your children with Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. And you can torture Mr. Anne with Friends and its reunion special (blech...I think I just threw up in my mouth).

Amazon Prime still has my favorite content (and Invincible fast approaches...and free shipping...and I get to help Jeff Bezos...coitadinho...put food on his table which makes me feel like a good and generous soul).

Then Disney+ which has an amazing series lineup for 2021.

I may ditch Netflix after I finally watch season 3 of Stranger Things. I mostly only watch documentaries on Netflix. *yawn*

Amazon Prime: 120/year (10/mo...I used a calculator to save everyone the mental stress)

Disney+/ESPN/Hulu: 13/mo

Netflix: 18/mo

HBOMax: 15/mo

Total: 56/mo (used that calculator again...required a few attempts)

Less than what I used to pay for cable/satellite (had to have ESPN) and the content is more varied, much better and easily accessible.

Not much time to watch TV (or read) right now. There’s a revolution happening. Knoxville, represent!

message 41: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I took Netflix down to 2 screens when the price bump happened. I can't see paying $20 a month for it. I may end up going down to one screen eventually and just losing the HD option.
Hulu has some excellent content, so I'll be keeping that at $12 without ads. <--so worth it to get rid of ads, but nice to know I can drop down to $6 a month if I need to and keep the content.
Amazon Prime is just a good deal. We order so much shit online...daily. Getting Prime tv is a bonus and their content has improved 1000% from where they started at. I watch more Prime than anything else.
Disney+? Somebody sold me on that one a while back. While I don't care for anything they have on there now, I'll be keeping it strictly for all the new Marvel shows that come out.
Supposedly. Now, if for some reason, they can't get their shit together, I may wait until the full shows drop. This one show a week thing is for the birds.

message 42: by Dave (new)

Dave I just changed Netflix from Premium to Standard. Thank you for the reminder. Now, I can buy four more burritos at Taco Bell each month. I can give up 4K, but I don’t think I can go back to non-HD.

I keep Hulu as part of the bundle. I subscribed to Hulu before Disney+ because that was my live TV (sports). Pandemic ruined sports. (And lest I be called insensitive, it also killed people which is the greater tragedy. Kinda.) I took away live TV (expensive) and lost season 4 of Rick and Morty. HBOMax to the rescue. Hulu has a lot of content, but the service feels like watching TV to me.

The Expanse is one of my favorite shows ever (haven’t watched the newest season yet because of that “for the birds” thing). The Boys is great. I liked Hunters and Undone. And Prime has some great original movies and all sorts of anime from the 80s/90s for my youngest son: Robotech and Starblazers. He finds them entertainingly “lame” compared to the anime he prefers. Know your history, son. :)

Nothing on Disney+ currently appeals to you? I think the service has the best interface. I revisit Star Wars stuff every now and then. Just a few clicks to watch Empire Strikes Back or Rogue One. I could not have even dreamed of watching Star Wars at home when I was a kid. I’ll sift through The Simpsons, too. And...The Sound of Music!!! Surprisingly, my sons and my wife’s sons enjoyed the musical, too. You can tell teenagers are enjoying when the snide comments subside. Did you take a peek at the 2021 Marvel series trailers? What If...?!!!

I watched the first couple episodes of Game of Thrones this week. The opening sequence...very macabre and gory. Unexpected. Then, what I had heard...lots of breasts. They come in pairs apparently. A very confusing backstory...I still can’t figure out which king was killed, who the queen is and who the blond dude is that’s giving his sister (more breasts...I have nothing against breasts although I was bottle fed which explains a lot...but the breasts seemed...gratuitous?) to Aquaman (who is way more hunky here than Aquaman...may be the way he grunts in the series or shags the blond dude’s sister...I am hoping he takes the blond dude). And HBOMax has Rick and Morty. :)

Anne Did you take a peek at the 2021 Marvel series trailers? What If...?!!!

YES! That may have excited me more than it should have!
And no, I'm not interested in anything on Disney+ right now but the boys loved The Mandalorian. ;)
The new Marvel trailers have convinced me that Disney will definitely be a keeper.

I would love to be able to get into GoT, but I just haven't yet. I tried years ago but was bored and never finished the 1st episode. Which, to be really fair, isn't exactly giving it a shot. I may try again soon.

I'm a season or 2 into The Expanse. Very cool so far, but I need another Saturday to sit on my ass and binge. It hasn't happened recently. SOON!

message 44: by Dave (new)

Dave Zombie Captain America!!!

I’m not sayin’...but I might have had to take a cold shower after seeing that trailer to What If...?. Real cold. That animation was like Mind Viagra. I thought that I might have to seek medical assistance after watching it for more than four hours...

Nothing right now??? The entirety of the MCU is on Disney+ not to mention Star Wars and everything Pixar. Tangled for gawd’s sake! Every episode of The Simpsons and now even the X-Men movies. I can’t shovel money fast enough to Disney. (Mainly because I can’t make money fast enough to have to use a shovel.)

I sense you are not a fan of reruns/rewatches.

I haven’t started season 2 of The Mandalorian yet. My wife and sons betrayed me and I don’t feel like watching it alone. The last episode of season 1 of The Mandalorian had a TIE fighter scene that rivalled (or surpassed) Rey vs Kylo’s TIE in Rise of the Skywalker.

I didn’t know Game of Thrones went for 8 seasons. I stumbled into that today. :( I am disheartened. I don’t have that kind of viewing stamina anymore. And I reached my breast viewing quota for 2021 halfway through the first episode. Menage a cinq. You were bored? Hmmm. You must not be a fan of decapitations. Or breasts. Or decapitations spliced between breasts.

The Expanse...I thought each season got better with a slight letdown going into season 4 (for spoilery reasons...I thought season 4 would be more...exotic?).

James and Naomi. Be still my heart. I hope they work out. My favorite sci-fi couple. Even more than Leia and Han, Chani and Muad’dib, Effie and Andy, and Kirk and Spock.

And Amos!!! Very no nonsense. The most repeated line by my sons and I (until “We’re storming the Capitol. It’s a revolution.”)...

I am that guy.

Priceless.

Our whole family has been watching Warrior. My dad and I had already seen season one but we’re rewatching it it’s so good.
My dad and I have watched piles of HBO originals in the last year. Perry Mason, The Plot Against America and Westworld were notably good! The only 2 I didn’t care for were Lovecraft Country (then again I didn’t like the book either) and Raised By Wolves (which I gave up on after 2 episodes, kinda surprising since I’m a big fan of the Alien films). We’ve recently been watching Titans (surprisingly good!) and of course South Park (probably my favorite show)!
My mom and I watched the very funny and actiony (but NOT FOR KIDS) Harley Quinn cartoon! Looking forward to season 3.
I also got myself some Robot Chicken to enjoy and recently The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (loved as a kid, rewatching partially to catch horror references I missed when I was younger!).
For films though, it’s been mostly horror for me, some other stuff (including the recently added pile of DC animated films, the Deathstroke: Knights and Dragons cartoon was pretty great) but mostly horror. Between The Conjuring universe, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Aliens, quite a few Stephen King films and some Blumhouse content there’s definitely some stuff there for horror fans (though I would definitely skip the 2019 remake of Black Christmas, scariest things in that one were the terrible writing and terrible acting)!
Also gotta agree with Dave about Friends. Gosh, I couldn’t name a more overrated than fucking Friends... I also am beginning to agree with him about Netflix, there’s some good stuff on there but it’s getting more rare. I am looking forward to Stranger Things season 4 and my family has a new season of Cobra Kai to watch (though probably after Warrior and AHS: 1984).
Amazon Prime is good. Like having free shipping, The Boys, The Expanse, Wayne and the occasional low budget and/or old horror and sci-fi movies found there. IIRC Amazon Prime will be doing an East of West TV series so I look forward to that a lot (I would also recommend Patriot and The Tick but they both got canceled which is especially disappointing regarding Patriot since it was a television masterpiece though you could probably still watch just the 2 seasons that exist since it wasn’t a huge cliffhanger IIRC).
We also play around with a 4th one that we never keep, was Shudder for a few months (awesome for indie and old horror movies!) and right now it’s Starz (decent movie selection and I’m finally getting around to Power after several people recommended it). Probably gonna go with AMC+ next (mom likes TWD and I like horror movies), maybe try Disney+ soon (only for MCU content and because multiple people have recommended The Mandolorian. As I stated in a recent review I’ll watch but usually don’t care much about Disney’s cartoons, my favorite part usually being the internet’s sexy fan art) and of course we’ll need to get on Epix again once season 2 of Pennyworth is wrapped up (season 1 was so fucking good!).

message 46: by Dave (last edited Jan 15, 2021 12:31AM) (new)

Dave Just finished season 1 of Throne of Breasts. I grabbed some hummus and pita chips and sat down for the long haul. (I need a more comfy couch if I am to survive eight seasons. Indolence is exhausting.)

I am...intrigued. Especially by the season ending (which fittingly ended with breasts [but this time the nudity made a lot more sense] and three (view spoiler)).

The opening grabbed my attention (zombies) and then I suffered a bit of your fate, Anne. Bored. Until I realised that GoT was nothing like Tolkien. Nothing really fantastical. When I began thinking of the show as Dynasty or Falcon Crest with swords, everything made a lot more sense to me. I required the whole season to understand that “incest” and “bastards” are for real and very prevalent in GRRM’s world (or at least the TV version of it).

Also, if I had come at it thinking “mystery” like Columbo or Scooby-Doo (where all the mysteries center on “Who be yo’ baby’s daddy?”) instead of fantasy like the Prydain Chronicles, then I would have acclimated much more quickly.

And since you luvvvved Moore’s Watchmen, HBOMax has a series based on that inimitable world. Are you hooked yet?

Thank you for the rec L. I will try Warrior interspersed with GoT. I like martial art dramas/comedies.

I love Robot Chicken. They have the coolest Aquaman shorts. :) I consume it mostly on YouTube. I saw HBOMax has Beavis and Butthead today.

I can’t wait to start digging through the DC Animated Universe.

I love to be scared, but horror rarely works for me. I usually find it disturbing (and not scary) or silly or both. The Exorcist was one of the few movies that terrified me. My sons laughed all the way through it this summer (when I finally found the courage to watch it with them) so that’s ruined for me now. (I just hope they had nightmares and wet themselves.) The bed/clown/tree scene in Poltergeist scared me, but I think that was age related.

I forgot Cobra Kai on Netflix. I liked it. Martial arts and nostalgia. I also forgot Jack Ryan on Prime. Good stuff.

So many choices these days.

I did not know Prime was doing a series based on Hickman’s East of West. I was aware of Invincible (awesome trailer) and Fear Agent.

Anne Was not aware of East of West or Fear Agent, either. I'll be looking for those!
Got into Hulu's Hellstrom but there's only one season.

Unpopular opinion time!
Watchmen sequel TV show > Overrated Watchmen comic!
Oh and should warn, just like you were saying with GoT (I still need to watch that), expect lots of gory murders and full frontal nudity in Warrior. I personally don’t mind either of those in the slightest (hell I actually like the gory action scenes and understand the nudity from an artistic POV (I know, fuckin’ artsy nerd)) but just a warning for those who do.
It was a couple years ago when I heard about Prime doing East of West, unfortunately haven’t heard shit since so that might not actually happen, IDK. Same for the Lazarus series they were meant to be doing. Then again it took The Boys and Invincible (more unpopular opinions: probably not gonna bother watching unless my dad wants to, I didn’t get into the comic) a long time so I guess we’ll just have to see.
Recently watched The Exorcist for the first time (it was recently on HBOMax). Pretty good but I liked the book more.

I’ll have to try Hulu sometime. Probably whenever that FX on Hulu thing releases their upcoming Alien TV series. I’ll probably watch Hellstorm then.

Haven’t heard of that show. Is it streaming anywhere?

Dave I have not viewed Watchmen on HBOMax so I cannot offer any comparison. I enjoyed Snyder’s film which Moore loathed. I also enjoyed the comic (graphic novel).

I care little for popularity or ratings. Claiming Watchmen (the comic) is “overrated” means little to me. You love it or hate it or are somewhere in the middle or avoid it. Ratings may help determine my purchases, but never my enjoyment.

I am not offended by gore or nudity or profanity. Only its gratuitous or awkward use. I have seen some horrible stuff in real life (the worst being a canon blowing off a guy’s leg and arm and half his face during a Civil War reenactment on July 4th...the second may have been accidentally running over a hutch of baby rabbits with a lawnmower...many others). I have seen my fair share of penises and vaginas and breasts. They hold little mystery for me.

Art is incredibly subjective.

Gore worked in Seven for me. So much so that I will never watch it again. Not because of the gore (although I am squeamish), but because of how psychologically disturbing the movie was. Very powerful. Especially the ending. The gore in GoT is persistent and unnecessary to the story. Overused until it actually dulls the narrative instead of enhancing it.

In GoT, I understood the nudity at the end of the final episode of season 1. I also understood the full-on penis shots (which were used sparingly and in very non-sexual situations). Nudity was used to very comical effect with the rising prostitute and the prattling, elderly minister.

I do not find much about GoT artsy, but it is entertaining. Perhaps a few too many plot twists and betrayals which can cross the line into parody.

Deferrals seem to happen a lot with non-mainstream comic properties. Supercool teaser trailer for Seeley’s Revival three years ago and nothing since... :(

Invincible remains my favorite superhero comic. It knew when and how to end which was the best part for me.

I also preferred Blatty’s novel to Friedkin’s film...much more profound emotion on the meaning of and loss of faith. But the film still terrified me when I saw it for the first time at age 15, and I appreciate the aesthetic of the film. Great movie.

I do not know Hellstrom, but my viewing time is booked through early spring with GoT (the pop culture phenomenon...though I am way too late to discuss it at the water cooler), The Alienist (my wife’s rec), The Expanse and Stranger Things. I am way behind. :(

Also trying to finish Sabaa Tahir’s series and Pierce Brown’s Dark Age. (I think someone is making a movie/series based on Red Rising.)

L. McCoy Yeah art is definitely subjective. When I call something great, trash, underrated, overrated, etc. it is all from my personal POV.
I was wondering what the hell happened with that Revival movie. It’s probably gonna come out the same day Dead Island 2 comes out (I was recently looking at a thing where someone mentioned the announcement trailer for that game came out when they were 12 and now they’re 18. Game still ain’t out).
I actually read the first 3 Red Rising books recently. Pretty good stuff. I saw something saying that the movie was cancelled but a TV series is in the works.
