I don't have the best track record with the Bridgertons series (I know, blasphemy), but I'm making my way through all of my unread books in the series prior to the release of the Netflix series. Yes, I am very excited for the show even if I have had mixed results with the books. It's a show based off of a romance series! I feel like a proud mama.

So where does To Sir Phillip, With Love fall in my Bridgerton scale? Squarely in the middle.

I liked the story, even a lot at times, but I kept frowning at how stupid Philip acted. Why do you keep insisting and telling your wife over and over again how you want her to care for your kids and that's basically it? Stop calling having a wife convenient! Ugh, I wanted to smack him. Hard. He liked how clever and chatty Eloise was when it suited him, but when it didn't, he just acted annoyed. I wanted some good apologies for his behavior, and I felt frustrated with him, even though he sort of redeemed himself at the end. Sort of.

There were some cute moments with the entire Bridgerton clan, and I liked Eloise a great deal, so I left the book feeling reasonably happy. Here's to hoping I have some luck with the remainder of the series.

Coming in December!

French_fry I remember loving The Viscount Who Loved Me but the rest of the series was mostly just fine for me.

Heather K (dentist in my spare time) I’m certainly not a fan girl but I enjoy a few of them. Trying to give them all a shot!

UnderCoverBookAddict My favorite is Hyacinth’s and Penelope’s! The rest.... No so sure about! But those two I can read any time! And I couldn’t agree more with you about Philip! I too wanted to smack him hard! And in my eyes he never redeemed himself. You know when you don’t exactly remember specifics but the feeling a moment evoked. That’s what I remembered while reading your review. That I thought he owe her more apologies specially with how great she was and she let him off the hook too easily after his behavior. And the deceased wife is another story.

UnderCoverBookAddict *Sorry to barge in with my monologue :)

YES! I have to read those two that you listed. I haven't read them yet! Will bump them up!

UnderCoverBookAddict Let me know what you think about Hyacinth’s! Is one of my favorite books! I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🥰

Sarah Wallace I’m loving your reviews because I’m two books in to the Bridgerton series and I’m struggling. I read the first one years ago and hated it and just finished the second one and didn’t love it either. But I did enjoy the series so I want to give them more of a try. So I’m glad I can find your reviews to gauge my feelings!

I liked it!

Truly not a great series, IMO. I loved a few, though. A few were total trash.

Morgan Many Books Girl, I feel you. Bridgerton is akin to how I feel about Jane Austen which is to say almost complete ambivalence. Quinn has a coupe thoroughly strong novels, but the Bridgerton books—in my opinion—are not among them.

100%

Preeti Thank God !!! I felt so bad because I gave this book 3 star and I dnf ' Duke & I ' . Then shame of all shame could not force myself to read any other book from Bridegton series. Then the craziness started after the Netflix show and I felt so weird like I was supposed to feel something in these books but I missed it. Good to know 'You' have same feeling towards the book

I only like a few of them

Carmen I think Quinn writes really great love scenes but most of her books leave me flat ...and I think you touched on it. She has her characters say and do dumb things and you start losing interest in the plot after a while

Marie B. I was thinking of stopping here with this one as the other characters, the other siblings, were not flushed out in the series but some of the comments on here lead me to believe the best is yet to come so I continue.

Kitty Kate I like your comments. On Philip's characterization, could she (Julia) historically present the male of the times? Or this is just her writing? I know the men in that era didn't think much of the women, but still.. towards the end, the way he is presented is just wrong!

Exactly!!

I really enjoyed Francesca's book, but most of the others were meh or worse for me.

There are soooo many historical romance writers who do it better than Julia Quinn. Just my opinion, though. And thanks!

Ashley-Anne I like Julia Quinn, I've read most of her backlist but this is my controversial opinion: Tessa Dare blows Quinn out of the Regency water. and I know this is because Dare is standing on the shoulders of Quinn's giant, but if people ask me to recommend a historical romance? Tessa Dare beats out Julia Quinn nearly every time
