[2.9] A plotless, meandering novel with stunning descriptions of the New Mexican landscape in the mid 1800s. Cather punctuates her lavish verbal paintings with anecdotes about two well intentioned French priests who attempt to root out the corruption practiced by fellow clergy and civilize the "natives." Considered by many to be Cather's masterpiece, it is my least favorite novel of hers and I was mostly bored.

I liked it more than you, lisa, but it wasn't my favorite Cather novel.

The one Cather book I read bored me (can’t even remember which book it was, and it was dons ago). I’ve stayed clear ever since. Nice review, Lisa.

I remember (decades ago) trying to read this after I'd finished "My Antonia" which I LOVED!!!!!! I did not get far in Archbishop.

Sorry it was boring. Another writer I'm yet to read. I bought My Antonia, but I'm yet to read it.

100% agree. Love all other Cather but couldn’t get into this one.
