In time for your Halloween scares.

Well, thanks for destroying my childhood dream of stumbling upon a portal to another world, author. If I see one now I'm running like hell.

****

It's here! I am reading it! In bed with my cat to protect me from the creepy parts!

Yay! I won a giveaway for this! Not sure if it's coming in October (the scheduled release date) or immediately, but I'm looking forward to it. I really enjoyed her previous Weird Horror-inspired novel, The Twisted Ones, which used Arthur Machen's The White People as its base.

message 4: by Mir (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mir The hot, hot coasts. :(

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Good plan! I'm not sure if I should read this so I'll await your review.

Mir Hmm. It's definitely not too horror-y for you. I'm not sure if it's your taste in horror, though. Have you read Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon before? She does several different sorts of books and I think her dark fantasy might be more your speed. Maybe her retelling of Bluebeard?

Here's a short story of hers you can try free if you want a sense of her style:

Oh, she also does cute kids stuff, check it out for the offspring.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Thanks! I'm not necessarily worried about how horror-y it is. It's just that horror usually disappoints me (movies too). Like recently with The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, and a few years ago with Bird Box. I definitely fell into the "everyone loved it but me" camp.

Mir I didn't read either of those so I can't offer a comparison. This is loosely based on The Willows, if you've read that short story.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ Interesting!

Melki Well, thanks for destroying my childhood dream of stumbling upon a portal to another world...

Gee, my childhood dreams tended to be about free candy, stuffed animals, and one day when my parents didn't yell at each other. Though now that you mention it . . . a portal to another world might have taken care of all those dreams.

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ I used to imagine a secret passage in my house. It was all dark and dungeon like (being in the walls of the house and all), but there was a big fluffy bed with Strawberry Shortcake bedding. Best of both worlds, I guess.

Mystery and suspense with a little dollop of comfort. Sounds perfect to me!

Have you read The Woman in the Wall?

Heather ~*dread mushrooms*~ No, but I'll see if I can get a copy. Sounds like I might have been Anna in another life lol.

Nia Sorry, Mir, I love your update comment, but, in my previous (soon-to-be-again next) wip, the Cat is not your friend... :-)

Actually the cat totally gets her in more trouble. Unlike my personal cat, who would have hidden if there were monsters.
