I loved the movie, so I thought I would enjoy the book and it was delightful, very charming and full of silver linings. This is a book about mental illness and recovery from so it is weird that it has such a light tone. It works though. I really empathized with Pat and Tiffany and their odyssey to wellness, self-fulfillment and enlightenment.
Pat's family dynamic was more troublesome in the book and you could understand why he had such a terrible temper with his closed-off father as an example. His mother is wonderful, but a little too much of a door mat until she becomes a wee bit more empowered. In the book, he has been in the "bad place" for a much longer time than is hinted at in the movie too.
I loved the interactions between Pat and his therapist, Cliff. This was told rather well in the movie too. If I had one drawback I would say it is in the way Pat talks to himself which is in a monotone voice and he is always reciting trite phrases to himself, but perhaps this is his way, since he loves sports and silver linings of getting to a version of his world that he can understand and strive for.

Glad you enjoyed this! I wasn't too fond of Lawrence in the film but I do like Bradley but overall didn't care for the film. "Book is always better!"

Too true Karina! I thought Lawrence was okay, but you're right it was an eccentric performance,

Fab review Beverly. I'm reading this at the moment. I really love Pat, though I realise he's not an easy character to live with.

Oh, yes, I would be very frustrated living with him. His mom is a saint. And thanks Nat!

The book came first, as is the usual circumstance. Not always, but mostly.

It does Michelle, if anything it makes me like the movie more, because I feel some things are explained better.
