My goodness, 40 isn't THAT old.

I want to like this book, I really do. However, it's almost offensive how old the author is making 40yr olds sound. Jessie says at one point that at her age, if she jumps her knees are likely to collapse. What? Then some young guys, seemingly in their 20's, start bothering her and Austin on their walk back to the Ivy House and one of the boys calls Austin "grandpa". I get they were just jerks, but come on now.. 40 isn't that old. I'm 38 and in terrible shape, but I can still jump without hurting myself and I certainly don't even remotely resemble a grandparent. I mean good grief, they're 40...not 60 or 70. I understand that this book is specifically written about middle-age, but the author is making those of us that are middle-age sound like we're nearing the end of our life, not just beginning the middle of it. I'm not sure how old the author is, but in her writing she's coming across as a kid and how they view anyone over 30 as ancient. I know she isn't that young!

Emma Totally agree. I enjoyed the book, but I was bothered by the age thing. I’m 39 and I keep thinking - the author is mistaking 40 for 50. That grandpa comment was ridiculous. I picture Austin like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and no one would ever call him grandpa. And she mentions age spots at one point and I thought, what??? How old does she think 40 is?

rabbit I'm 40 and I can't relate to the heroine. Yes my knees hurt a bit and hangovers last longer but seriously? I feel younger than Jacinta who reads more like a 50 year old. Also found the stress incontinence jokes unfunny.

Mattie The author wrote as if she were terrified of aging, or was so old she forgot what 40 was.

Brandy The author is 40 and is actually struggling with her knees. I do agree that many of these paranormal women's fiction books seem to over exaggerate what being in our 40's is like, but then I force myself to remember not everyone feels age the same way. *shrugs*

Sandra I think it's called self deprecation/sarcasm as far as Jessie herself. As far as making you feel old, but that's really on you. I'm old enough to be your grandmother, and it's not making me feel old, or near death. Quite the opposite in fact. If it makes you feel any better, I think most people under 40 aren't really even cognizant of how us older folks feel, physically or mentally.

Carewolf Probably based on self-experience, but forgot to make the protagonist obese as well to make the experiences match.

Ik I totally, totally agree! I just wrote my own review before reading yours and it's good to know I'm not the only one making the 40 vs 60 comparison.

Tara♥ {MindforBooks} THANK YOU!!! I'm 40 and not once have I felt old but this book makes it sound like I should be sent off to the knackers yard!! :D

aimee laflamme BTW 60 is not old….and I think the character was exaggerating, being a little dramatic for humors sake. We all do that sometimes, don’t we?

Carin I liked this book well enough, but oh yeah, that part bothered me so much. I'm in my 50's and while I was not in the best shape in my 40's, I absolutely did not feel old and at death's door. This doesn't feel like it was written by someone who is middle-aged, but from someone who is making a guess at what it's like. But, other than that, I still enjoyed it.

~Jennifer~ I completely see where your coming from, I also understand the author too. Until I was around 40 I felt like I was in my mid 20’s and anyone who asked about my age was shocked I wasn’t. Then around 40 I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis, which is a autoimmune disease, now I sometimes feel like I’m 80. I don’t think age matters how you feel it is more your health that makes you feel it. But there are people out there who are all about the numbers. Personally I don’t want a book that harps on age constantly, but if they mention it’s fine.
