DNFed it at 55 % or so. I can't believe that this difficult to read and difficult to follow story is so highly rated on Goodreads.
The story is so painstakingly revealed, yet there are more questions than answers. The coup prepared by the oppressed moon dwellers seems to take forever.
Each successful book has its own audience, or should I say, readership. Maybe only the hardcore sci-fi crowd rated this beast of a book.
Maybe the usual romance reading housewives had a hand in rating this book 4 or 5 stars, but I can't see this happening. I'm amazed that I lasted that long.

I think his work is so highly regarded because he was like a pioneer when scifi was newer. But I agree, this was a clunky read.

I know exactly what you mean. I wonder what class of people began first to praise Heinlein for his writing.

Good review Luffy, I read it many years ago and it is on my TBR to re-read, so we shall see what I think

Thanks, Adrian! It's a great book for the initiated. Not for me, though.

I can't see myself reading a second book of his. You are probably more adapted to his output.

Good and honest review! Not every book is going to please every reader :0) For instance, I wasn’t too enamoured by The Great Gatsby although I appreciated the language. As for Heinlein, he is not one of my favourite authors - I didn’t like Starship Troopers, preferring Scalzi’s take on the matter - but I did like this one.

Thank you for your kindness and your comprehension. i picture a book like a wall to be climbed. There are holds for our hands to reach them. But sometimes while someone can climb to the top (you), others can't have a grip of these holds. That's how I see it.

Interesting take. I'm loving this book. It's pretty average as sci-fi but to me the best part is the in-depth look at how a revolution works and the Heinlein's great understanding of the behavior of individual, governments, and mobs. If that makes any sense.

I know this book has some intrinsic value. But I've always found classic sci-fi books to be inaccessible to me. Thanks for your comment. :)

You rated it 5 stars, but since you liked my review, I guess I'm forgiven. ;)

I didn't get that far. Found it dreadful. And I'm a hard SF reader and Heinlein fan. I didn't like his Number of the Beast either. But Stranger in a Strange Land was great! Sometimes Heinlein hits, sometimes he misses...

Same for many authors. I'm not a pukka Sci Fi fan, but now and then I chance upon an impossible to resist blurb. Believe it or not, this was one of them.

I can see that. Book 1 had long moments with a lot of exposition over all the background steps taken to mount the revolution. Once they took over I felt like things got drastically more interesting. The trip to Earth (you might not have read that far) was also fascinating, contrasting moon life for "Earthworms" curious about it. Overall I loved it and have no issues with the rating of 5-stars I gave it. FYI I read this for the first time in 2021, after a false start in the 90's. Mannie's broken English had thrown me off, and the audiobook is expertly delivered with just enough of a slight Russian accent to make it work. I can see how it's not for everyone, but this middle aged Sci-fi nerd and software engineer here certainly loved it.

Books are sometimes divisive like that. Reading is a bit like rock climbing. What was within your reach wasn't within mine. Thanks for staying graciously civil.

I am glad I am not alone. I think I can read and enjoy most things but this is just sooooo tedious!
But I shall struggle on (I think).

Hope it pays off for you. I have made my peace with the fact that one is never alone with an opinion.
