I am a big fan of Churchill. I have an extensive library of books by and about Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965). I was going to purchase this book for my library, but I found the typeface so tiny I was unable to read it. I do have reduced vision and primarily use audiobooks so I ended up purchasing this book in audiobook format. Unfortunately, I did not have access to the maps, illustrations and photographs in the printed format. This is the first major biography of Churchill since “Churchill: A Biography” by Roy Jenkins in 2001. My favorite is Winston’s own memoirs, but I do like the multiple volumes by William Manchester. Andrew Roberts is a British historian. A goal of Roberts was to write this in one volume but the tiny print the publisher had to use to achieve the goal makes it unrealistic. The book is 1152 pages.

The book is well written and is divided into two section: his life prior to 1940 and his life after 1940. Roberts has new information from newly released documents and letters including meeting notes from King George VI. It appears that the King and Churchill had a good working relationship. But the majority of information is well known to Churchill fans and scholars. In trying to keep this into one volume, Roberts did not provide extensive analytic depth. I did not find the book to be hagiographic as some reviews have stated; but, it does have a bit of a Churchillian spin to it because he quoted a great deal from Churchill. I liked the last chapter as it provided a summary of the pros and cons about Churchill. Even with the addition of the new information, I did not learn anything new about Churchill, but I always like to read about my hero. If you have not read about Churchill before, this book will provide the latest overview of him.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is fifty hours and twenty-eight minutes. Stephen Thorne does a good job narrating the book. Thorne is a British actor and well-known audiobook narrator. It was great listening to his beautiful voice.

HBalikov Your my guiding light on Churchill books, Jean. Thanks!

Caroline What a pity about the small print! (My eyes aren't up to small print either, but I hugely prefer print to audiobooks....) They should have brought it out in two parts instead...

Mwrogers Could you help me? I want to read a biography about Churchill and there are so many out there. I would like for it to contain information about his family life and not just politics and war. The more I learn about this great man, the more I want to learn. What book would you recommend to this American?

Jean Mwrogers asked "I want to read a biography about Churchill---What book would you recommend"
I would definitely recommend the multi-volume biography by William Manchester. That will give a detailed account that you can build on with books dealing with a certain problems. If you want something in less detail the 2001 biography by Roy Jenkins is good. But I would go for Manchester. If you have the time I suggest you read one of Churchill's books. Start with " The Boer War" by WSC. HIs command of the English language, the cadence of words is outstanding.

Marianne Roncoli I share your love of Churchill and have read and continually read everything I can about him. I am troubled, however, by your concern about the print size. Why are you not using a Kindle version on-line where you can adjust the print size?

Jean Marianne wrote: "Why are you not using a Kindle version on-line where you can adjust the print size?"
I buy Churchill books in hardback format and have a dedicated bookcases for them. But this book the print was way to small. I did try an e-book but had a problem with getting the print large enough to easily read. Have not had that problem before with my Kindle app just on this book. I read many books via audiobook format due to my poor vision. I had no problem with the audiobook. Thanks for suggesting the e-book format and thanks for your comment.

Beata Wonderful review, Jean :)) I must say I'd like to read some books on Winston as I know too little about him ... audiobook sounds fine, especially if the narrator does a good job :) Have a grand weekend!!

Jean Beata wrote: "Wonderful review---audiobook sounds fine, especially if the narrator does a good job".
Thanks, Beata. Most of the narrators of Churchill book are good but I like John Lee. Maybe because he has narrated so many of them.

Beata Yes, John Lee is one of my fav narrators, too :))

Dana Hello Jean, I found your review today as my husband who loves Churchill is wanting to embark on reading (not a reader at heart). I am thrilled as I am. I had already suggested audiobook which he will enjoy. I see the other books you recommended and will discuss with him. He tries to avoid excessive screen time so am also looking for any of those in large print. Thank you for your review and comments!

Jean Dana wrote: "Struggling to find anything in large print. do you have a source you go to to find large print books?"

I ask my local independent book store that I deal with all the time to get the large print of a book I want to read. They have been great. The more people ask for large print the more publishers will think of publishing large print books. I use to belong to Doubleday large print book club. In 2007 I lost my vision and after 27 operations I can see again but not as good as before. I went to the local center for the blind and they taught me how to do things and also introduced me to audiobooks and large print books. Hope this helps you.

Filipe Bottrel What do you think of Churchill’s biography by Martin Gilbert?

message 15: by Jean (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jean Filipe wrote: "What do you think of Churchill's biography by Martin Gilbert?"

Filipe, Sir Martin Gilbert was the official biographer of Churchill. His book I liked the best was Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years. Gilbert was a British historian and was an excellent writer and historian. I have a personal preference for William Manchester. But best of all I like to read Winston Churchill himself. He has such mastery of the English language.

Gustavo Berretta Jean which one would you recommend for reading Churchill's bio? Power od Words or Walking with Destiniy?

Jean Gustavo wrote: "Jean which one would you recommend for reading Churchill's bio? Power of Words or Walking with Destiny?

Walking with Destiny is a new biography. Nothing new in it. But a good review of Churchill. If you are a fan of Churchill and have read various other biographies then I would choose Power of Words. It is a collection of his key speeches. If you have never read any bios I would recommend the biography by William Manchester. If can not find Roy Jenkins did a good job on his biography. Manchester is my favorite. Hope this helps you.

Jean Paula wrote: "If you have a Kindle Fire tablet the font can be enlarged so you can read easily."

Thanks, Paula. I have only a iPad with the Kindle app. I had bought the hardcover of the book to add to my collection of Churchill books. I will keep this in mind if I buy a Kindle.

Steve The iPad kindle app will also make text as large as you need.
