Has it ever happened that you have been spellbound by a book, only to be terribly let down by its ending? I took up this Jodi Picoult with a lot of expectations, and of the almost 600 pages, I really enjoyed the first 570! Not a bit of reduction in pace and an optimum interest level maintained by the parallel past-present storyline. But the last chapter seemed in such a hurry to bring everything to a satisfactory close! It was like an art film had turned into a Bollywood potboiler. I mean, there are PLOT twists, and there are plot TWISTS! This was definitely in the second category. Anyone else who has read this and shared a similar feeling? I am still making up my mind about what rating to give the book.
PS: This is the second time this is happening to me with a Jodi Picoult book, the first being the popular "My Sister's Keeper".

Rosh, great review! I agree with you that the ending got wrapped up very quickly and succinctly.

Thanks, Sharon! Oh yes. If not for that ending, this would have been a 5 star for me too. :)

Great review, Rosh💕!!!!!! This book was truly heart breaking, but that ending? We don't talk about that, it wasn't the greatest😭!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Cara! ♥ I know right!! We just shouldn't talk about that - it killed the rest of the book. :(

Shame the ending ruined it a bit. Especially considering the length of the book and your enjoyment up to it. Good review, Rosh.

Thanks, Thibault and PB. Jodi Picoult is actually renowned for this. Her endings make or break out experience. The same thing has happened to me for 4 of her books now., but the rest of her writing is so great that I still read her. :D

Nice review Rosh 😊🌹❤️! I usually like her books, but didn't know if this one would be too depressing. Did you read her second to last book, called 'Wish you Were Here?'. I loved it and I'm curious to know if you have read it and if so what you thought of it. I'm grateful as always for your feedback about a novel that I have been meaning to read, but have not, yet. xx
That really sucks Rosh - I know how you feel. For a 600 page book to fall apart in the last 30 pages just stinks! This author has been a hit or miss for me.

Thanks, Karen! I also usually like her books, mainly for the themes she chooses to write about., I haven't read her latest two as those came out after I joined Netgalley. :D I do need to catch up on my regular TBR. 2024 hopefully will help me clear my backlog and lead a more balanced reading life. :)

Thanks, Nina! I'll be eager to read your thoughts on this. It has loads of points to offer a psychologist. :)

Exactly, Morgan! so many pages work well, and then suddenly the ending lets you down! It's disappointing. She has been more hits than misses for me, but her endings are more misses. I hated the ending of 'My Sister's Keeper' even more than this one!

I understand your feelings about the twists and ending, Rosh. Jodi has a way of doing that with all her books. Oy! Wonderful and honest review, as always! 🙂

Thanks much, Karen! :) Oh yes, Jodi does this with so many books that I am almost afraid to try her latest ones. She's still among my favourite writers though. I love the bravery of her topics. :)

Thanks, Jen! I liked it too, except for the ending. :)

I've never read this author before, & hadn't heard of her before joining this site so it's really interesting reading your thoughts on her book. Not sure if it would be a winner for me, but I enjoy living by proxy of your review xx

Thanks, Chantel! She is a mixed bag for me too, but I still read her books because I simply adore how she chooses tough themes rather than sticking to the tried and tested. :)
