The main characters in this thriller are a psychotherapist, Theo, and a mysterious artist, Alicia, who kills her husband and then doesn’t speak a word for years. As you might imagine, Theo wants to treat Alicia, so he eventually gets a staff position at the hospital where she is being held.
We have sections mostly from Theo’s point of view as he tries to get Alicia to talk and then snippets from Alicia’s journal. This helps up piece together pieces of the puzzle from the past along with Theo talking to Alicia’s friends and family -- almost like a detective. Interesting to learn that these actions aren't recommended for psychotherapists, you are meant to just treat the patient.
We start to get the picture of what happened on that fateful night and then there is a fantastic twist thrown in that I never saw coming!
An excellent debut novel from Alex Michaelides. I wish that I loved it like many other reviewers, but I think I’m on thriller overload, you have to really wow me to get 5 stars!

Great review, DeAnn 💖 this one checked all the marks for me. I'm taking a bit of a thriller break right now. Burnout is a real thing no matter how good the book.

So true Felicia!
So true Felicia!
I completely agree about a thriller needing to be exceptional to get 5 stars from me. The twist was really great, in that I didn't see it coming and I was truly surprised by it in a good way. But then the rest of it was just pretty average with the guy talking to random people. The "journal" entries were pretty interesting though.
DeAnn, terrific review. I am a bit on thriller overload too. I agree this was good, not 5 star, but definitely enjoyable!

Thanks Jan. I'm reading "The Huntress" now so this historical fiction might bring me off thriller overload! Here's hoping.

Wonderful review, DeAnn! I hadn’t paid much attention to the premise- yeah, definitely sounds a detective and not a therapist. I have this one from BOTM to read someday. I hope I like it as well as you did. ♥️

Thanks Rae! I had it on hold for a while and then lucked out and found it on the Express shelf at my library. Those are the ones that can't be renewed and it's hit or miss which ones will be available when you go. It's a quick read, so hopefully those readers ahead of you will return theirs quickly!
