Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
“   There is a type of woman who, ever since my boyhood, has invariably attracted me.
She is the woman with the eyes of a sphinx, whom desire makes cruel and cruelty makes desirous.”
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, The Master Masochist: Tales of a Sadistic Mistress

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
“When parents, in the belief that they are doing the right thing, trample underfoot some ideal that lies latent in the heart of their child they cause, more often than not, to germinate in its place disillusionment, hatred, vice; it is fortunate indeed if the existence thus turned awry does not degrade into a life of crime, instead of one of calm content and universal respect.”
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, The Master Masochist: Tales of a Sadistic Mistress

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
“The Baron had become her slave: whatever she demanded of him he carried out with pleasure. When her humour so decreed, he would lie at her feet like a slave..., like a dog!”

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
“Whoever was in her presence trembled before her, and the more she made herself feared, the more it delighted her, the more it seemed to make her feel happy.”
Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, The Master Masochist: Tales of a Sadistic Mistress

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

Guy Is this the same title: Venus in Furs? If so, I recommended Wanda's response: The Confessions of Wanda Sacher-Masoch.
I thought his version was sort of hilarious.

Jonathan No, it's not Venus in Furs, Guy, it's a collection of his short stories that are in the same vein—lots of whips, furs and cruel women. I started hunting around for more English translations of Sacher-Masoch's work a little while ago and have found a few. He wrote a lot of Jewish tales as well.

I read ViF & Wanda's Confessions years and years ago—I really should read them again. I even read a biography of him, The First Masochist: A Biography of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, but can't remember a damn thing about it.
