Women in Translation 2021 book 4
Another fail, I am afraid. I won't rate the book because I skipped major chunks It won the Nobel prize, it is book about travel which is my favorite activity, I should have liked it. Flights is a collection of short stories, essays, thoughts, bits and pieces varying in length from a few sentences to a few pages. Some have a common characters and some have nothing related with the rest except it is about travel. I did not like the disjointed and unconnected structure, I thought many of the stories/essays were boring and the writing was also unimpressive for me. It won the Nobel prize so it is a valuable work but I would recommend trying a sample before buying the whole book.

Manan wrote: "I had similar experience with Nobel prize winning Elfrirde Jelinek's The Piano Teacher." i read about that book being controversial.
I had read it, I think, a decade ago. I recently bought it again along with her other novel Lust. I'm looking forward to reading them both again in near future. Maybe my sensibilities have changed.

Pavel wrote: "Agree with you absolutely! I'm struggling right now to finish it." No need to struggle. There are so many other excellent books out there. Many of them printed by Fitzcarraldo.
P.s. Felicitari pentru premiul acordat de Litera! Asta daca te-am identificat corect. Am citit zilele trecute despre el.

I know, I know, but I need to finish every book I begin in order to write about it.
Mulțumesc, eu sunt, și peste câteva luni îmi va apărea și romanul :)

A wrote: "I thought this looked interesting, but everyone I know has been disappointed... I wonder if the translation made it worse. Oh well" i read the Romanian translation so a different version of the book.
Mo wrote: "Would you say giving less stars as an alternative to not rating ?" i try not to rate if i read less than 50% of one book. I am not sure how much I read but probably not enough. I am giving 2* for what I read.
I remember having similar issues with this book in spite of being dazzled by some of her writing. I much preferred, another one of her works, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. It showcased her keen observational skills but lacked the disjointed style of this work.

For me it was one of those books that only started working after the first half. By then I started to see connections and topics.

Nobel Prize is a bullshit, long time ago. And Olga SomethingSomething is, in the best case, 3rd rate writer.
Marina wrote: "Nobel Prize is a bullshit, long time ago. And Olga SomethingSomething is, in the best case, 3rd rate writer." it’s not my favorite prize. Too political sometimes. About Olga, I really do not know what to say. I do not think she is 3rd rate but she thinks her books are more clever than they are. This is the impression her books give me.
Only impression. There are sooo sooo many better female writers, especially in South America. Her Nobel was nothing but political decision. And not only hers. Nobel is political prize for a very long time.
Tokarczuk did not receive Nobel prize for this book. She got it for her literature. This book was awarded with Man Booker Prize. Not that it makes much of a difference. You need to read the whole book in order do appreciate it, but I admit that it's sometimes boring or over the top. I've read it in Polish which can make a difference.
Marysia wrote: "Tokarczuk did not receive Nobel prize for this book. She got it for her literature. This book was awarded with Man Booker Prize. Not that it makes much of a difference. You need to read the whole b..." Correct, the Nobel it for all her literature. also DNFed The Book of Jacob so i guess the author is not for me.
