The Ashes of London (Marwood and Lovett, #1)

The writing was bland, I got no real sense of 1666, the characterization was flat, and we had two protagonists, who had no real connection to each other. I wasn't particularly interested in either of them. For a supposed mystery, getting over 10% through without even a hint of a dead body, or some other crime to investigate, was a very leisurely pace. And then (view spoiler) and I was out.
Very disappointing.

It was awful - can't think why I gave it a princely 2 stars! I was most of all horribly disappointed in my hopes for the excellent subject matter

Yes, I was very disappointed - I was looking forward to this one. The blurb sold me on "mystery-thriller during the Great Fire of London" and I got nothing of the sort.
The best thing I've read on the Norman conquest was a book called "The Norman Conquest" by Marc Morris. He's a link to my review:

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Mopple. It was just not a good fit for me. And at nearly 20% read I feel I gave it a fair chance.
I'm glad someone feels the same, I couldn't even finish this book as I found it so depressingly boring, the story was flat and so were the characters.Great review by the way.
Read to 40% and then binned the book. Should have done much earlier. Cant believe all these rave reviews in serious newspapers, money must have changed hands...
