it was ok
bookshelves: america-canada, fiction, classic-literature

Time is our most valuable commodity. Had enough of this!, Dick is precisely one of those, Rosemary is leaving me with clammy hands of bored annoyance, and Nicole appears to be living on another planet.

Two reasons why the two stars,
Beautiful sounding title
The French Riviera

Two reasons that stopped me trowing this out the window in frustration,
It's a borrowed book (from a rather charming lady)
Wouldn't want to knock somebody out on the sidewalk, I am on the fourth floor!

Steven Godin Was this really written by the same Fitzgerald who penned The Great Gatsby?

Jan I believe this is the most autobiographical of Fitzgerald's novels; he wrote it shortly after Zelda was hospitalized for nervous breakdown and he was battling alcoholism. I agree with your assessment and lost interest in revisiting this dark period in his life.

Steven Godin I knew about Zelda but not that he had a drink problem. The fact it has personal elements saddens me, but just couldn't go on into the final third, disappointed as really wanted to like this.

Dolors Oh, you make me wish for a re-read, Steven... I didn't manage to get into the book when I read it but I blamed my lame English for that at the time... Now that my English got a bit better I am afraid my response might not differ too much...

The fact I loved Gatsby so much affected my views as well, then he was at the height of his powers, maybe I expected too much here.

Jessaka What a great fun review. I don't like his books, but Gatsby and this is the only ones I have read.

Doubtful I will read him again, it's a shame he went out on a whimper with this, as did like Gatsby.

Adina (way behind on reviews, no notifications) I tried to read this soon after I finished and l enjoyed Gatsby. I could not read more than 50 pages.

I should have stopped well before I actually did, it was reading just for the sake of reading.

Marie Just started on this one, so haven’t formed an opinion yet. However, I wish you’d give Fitzgerald another try with ’The diamond as big as the Ritz & other stories’. Been several years since I read it, but I remeber it as a stylish collection of novellas more in the vein of ’Gatsby’. :)

Outmane May I please know why you didn't like enjoy reading this book, if you can still remember your reading experience ? It was my first Fitzgerald and I liked it.
