The Dead is considered by many to be Joyce's best short story. It is included in the short story collection, The Dubliners. It is the last in the collection and long, almost novella length. It's very different from Ulysses, very melancholic and introspective in nature.

I love many of the stories in Dubliners Duane, especially this one and the often anthologized "Araby."

I know, it's hugely different than either Ulysses or A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man! I find Dubliners the most enjoyable to read out of all of his works - it's like early Picasso before cubism, something experimental & new but still mixed with an older almost classic beauty before he diverged from the old craft more completely.
