First, let's get the pesky tidbit out of the way -- I received this book as an advanced reader copy from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Now, down to business. Kim, darling, I know that all good things must come to an end, but this book proves that you're at your best when you're in the world of the Hollows. Don't get me wrong, I adore Peri Reed and the cast of that series. The premise is neat and you add lots of fun twists and turns and bad boys and good boys and cats and a badass lead... but the Hollows is just BETTER. I mean honestly, the Hollows has PIXIES like Jenks and, newly introduced in this book, Orchid. I ADORED her, almost as much as I did Jenks - who happens to be one of my favorite book characters of all time.
A little backstory (see what I did there? this book is a prequel, so it's all backstory!) -- remember in the Hollows when we are introduced to this Urban Fantasy world? Yep, tomatoes + virus = human population decrease and supernatural creatures coming out of the hidden in plain sight closet. This book tells that story. It did such a good job that now I'm hankering for a reread of the entire 13 book (plus myriad shorties) series.
Even though we knew the inevitable ending, the path to get there was fun, the characters were well developed and lovable (for the most part), and we got more Hollows out of the deal. Side note here: we also get some cameos! I won't tell you who, because spoilers, but I loved the cameos!
I think there's enough material for another prequel to get us to the start of the Hollows, Kim, darling... even if it's just a series of shorties or a novella. Don't make me beg (because I will, and it will not be cute).

I'm going to HAVE to do a series reread this year... like I have time to reread yet another super long series lol
I never reread any series, EVER! There's so many books to be read that I just don't know how to go back to what I already know. You know what I mean? Standalones, yeah, sure, but never whole series. Although, when Hollows ended I was in a funk, so I just may miss them badly enough to go for a second run )
Oh I reread a lot. Not as much the past few years but I used to reread most of my favorites series every year or two. That was back before those series got it be over 10 books long and the number of favorites series jumped bc of Goodreads
Yep, my library wasn't that big before GR, but now I'd have to get a bigger apartment. Thank God for ebooks. Rereading a short series is one thing but can you imagine rereading In Death, where there are 43 books to date? Yikes!
Oh no, that would never happen. lol I'd have to mark my favorites for potential retreads and skip the rest

Pardon my french"Well, yes he is. My other friend hated this one as well. Mostly because the first 40% or so was all talk about the science of tomatoes and Kal being a f..kety f..k f..ker :P
I think it's because I like the Hollows so much better than Peri Reed that I was excited to be back in that world, even with Kal and tomato-boredom :P

I really loved the Hollows. I plan on rereading it someday -- maybe this year, but if so, later in the year. I've just got so much new stuff I still need to get through!

Ugh I'm dying to know what happens to Daniel. I keep replaying all the Hollows books in my head trying to think if he pops up anywhere and can't think of anything. I was really hoping for a certain other character to show up who we never meet but know all about from the Hollows.I really want more to this book, something that might make me even slightly like Kal.
Yeah I don't think Daniel is mentioned at all in the Hollows. I do wish we had gotten more info on his future
I still haven't forgiven her for a certain something she did to a certain favorite character of mine. I'm pretty sure I will never forgive her. She's on my list.

Shoot, you're right. Should've used spoiler button. My bad. I tend to not think straight when it comes to that particular character ((The heartbreaks you mentioned were tough too, but that first one was the worst for me to handle. I cried my eyes out, looked like a blowfish the next day and my mood was ruined for days to come. I wasn't the only one to react that way too. *Sigh*
Nope, Sleepless, I was a hot mess. I couldn't even rate the book and almost didn't continue. Sign of a good writer though when she can destroy us and we keep coming back for more.
One thing I can say about miss Harrison is that she sure knows how to keep her readers in the palm of her hand. I never even had a shadow of inclination to quit the series after that book. I kept hoping for a miracle, but never ever did I imagine not continuing with the story either way.
I really miss this series, and was thinking of attempting to squeeze in a reread in the tail end of this year, but with this reminder of all the heartbreak, I'm not sure I can take it LOL

Am I missing something? I've read the series and some of the novellas, but I don't remember the story of Trisk, Kal and the baby continuing. Daniel? Orchid? I'm going to re-read them since it's been awhile.
I'm not sure I understand your question. All of the characters you mentioned are in this prequel only, aside from the baby. In my review I said I wished she would write more to continue the stories in between this and the start of the original series. Is that what you're referring to?
This book was my first intro to the hollows. Really hoping the characters pop up in the rest of the books, besides just Kal! Im like halfway through dead witch walking and there are definitely some things that big me about it, but ill keep going.

I wish you'd been able to read the series first -- this functions much better as a post-series prequel... but I'm glad you enjoyed it and jumped into the main series. I LOVE JENKS!

I agree with you on all points p. I too loved the Hollows and reading this blockade me want more again. I could never get enough of the Hollows. Loved Jenks and any of his kind... these books were fun and entertaining. Miss them please edit some not.
Just finished the turn have read the hollows and wounder is there aa book between the turn and hollows. If not is one coming up
I don't think there is one, at least not currently.But she just finished writing and selling American Demon, which is the next book in the Hollows series (book #14), and is starting The Rule, which is book #15. :)
