I wonder how many people would not have lived the part of one character or another in this brief discourse on betrayal? The husband who suddenly discovers an overwhelming passion for his sister-in-law. The sister-in-law who takes what she can from this whilst insolently uncaring about the devastation she wrecks. And the central character herself, the wife, who suddenly realises from the most trivial of information, that her husband and her sister are at it.

In some situations, particularly those of the heart, militant feminist theory just doesn't work. For me, the strength of feminism is the person's ability to have a choice, rather than be dictated by social morality.

Well, to be fair, I don't think it was militant feminist comment on this book I was thinking of. It was just a Guardian feminist, ie somebody who thinks women are in a different position now, even though in fact things don't seem so different to me.

Just like for homosexual rights - the big obvious issues have been removed or diminished, but the hundreds of little things that in total far outweigh the few big things achieved pull the cause down. It is even harder when young Western women, who have been poorly educated in feminist history, can't understand what the fuss is all about. Heads desk!

Indeed, Dillwynia.
Indeed, Dillwynia.
Daunt Books was my favourite bookshop when I worked in London – it's just round the corner from BBC London and I used to love it when I was working there because it meant long lunch-breaks browsing and buying. Had no idea they also published things themselves.

It's right near an antipodean restaurant, a combination that could not make me happier on my visits to London. I hope their publishing arm is successful, rehabilitating forgotten modern works is something I do in a tiny way - nag my friends - but I imagine their way is more effective.
