Jason is a higher up at the company where Frank works. Frank needs a place to live and Jason offers up his spare room, they become roommates and as they get closer together Jason finds himself confused about his feelings for Frank. Frank ends up admitting that he is developing feelings for Jason and when Jason doesn't reciprocate Frank moves out. It forces Jason to confront his long hidden feelings and the story ends with him confessing that he does in fact have feelings for Frank.
It's a simple, quiet, sort of low-stakes story. I did appreciate that the story didn't focus hugely on overt homophobia and instead allowed Jason to work through his own internal world in a more calm realistic way....more

I’m not much of a print artist (I make my art with fabric and yarn) so I wasn’t sure how much I would get out of a ‘learn to draw’ book. But I loved the subject matter so I checked it out anyway. It’s got so much more than just a drawing book! I loved seeing the various concept sketches and hearing about Refrainbow’s process in creating their characters and giving them styles. It also includes sections for all of the Girlfriends too. It was really cool learning more about their fashion and color choices. And I liked the dynamic poses that were given for their drawings. It’s not what I would consider a total beginner’s learn to draw book, but it’s an excellent guide if you want to try dabbling in the world of Boyfriends.
Read This If You - Love the Boyfriends story, like art and drawing, appreciate learning about an artist’s process, love character design or want to learn more about it, like adorable pastel polycules....more

If you've never picked up needle and embroidery thread this book can get you going. It doesn't devote a lot of page space to discussion of materials, which would be useful for a total beginner, but the fact that you can check out the author's blog and youtube for more info is a nice bonus.
I liked the variety of projects, the sampler suggested looks fun and there were some project ideas that were out of the box, I've never seen a 3D apothecary jar embroidery project before and the idea of stitching on a wire basket was pretty cool!
This book would be great for a teen who wants to try out embroidery, good projects and bright eye catching colors would make this a good fit. And I want to order it for my library....more

I think the projects in the book would go really well with some self-care teen library programming and the book is a good one for frustrated creative folks.
Perhaps a bit naively, I had been hoping for something a little more useful in the shitty craft club book, not that art has to be useful. I like the idea and the self compassionate self-care aspect of the book very much....more

This was a solidly decent book of poetry for middle schoolish age kids I think. And I swear I didn't read their description ahead, but it IS like Shel Silverstein and Neil Gaiman collaborated on some creepy poetry and hired the illustrator for Scary Stories to tell in the Dark to do the art work.
There's some good horror-lite in the poems, I liked the one about everyone smiles in this town, and I enjoyed the burning at the stake poem as well. The art makes it too scary for younger readers and there's a little gore that you would want to be aware of in case you've got sensitive kids.
I think without the creepy art it wouldn't be as good....more

The book is visually appealing right from the get go. I knew I wanted to pick it up as soon as I saw the cover. Huyen Dinh has a very conversational tone throughout and it really suits this book. I've read a lot of lettering, art journal, and paper art books, and what sets this one apart is the way she's got her personality worked into it.
I liked all the personal examples, you can tell they're not just generic phrases created for the book. They're real life examples of project's she's done and art pieces that she's created. She balances these with easy to understand technical instruction and an easy to understand list of supplies as well. ...more
