Deserves its reputation as one of the best novels of the early 21st century. Beautifully written (and translated) and compulsively readable, the book’s best feature is probably its vivid, true to life characters. Ferrante assembles a large cast, but somehow makes them all feel like real, complex people. I also loved her setting of working-class, postwar Naples, a time and place I knew little about but that made for fascinating reading. While telling a great story, Ferrante touches on issues of gender, class, education, and more, while presenting a classic tale of female friendship. Features a powerful ending to boot. A tremendous accomplishment. 5.5 stars , highly recommended!
