It - renews excitement about the fact that we are living in the future, that the things that were sf just a few years ago when I was a kid are just on the cusp of happening. It gives so much possibility to the future and - particularly in light of the current economic and political climate - it's a beacon of light to be like, science, science is STILL AMAZING....more

But so much of it turned into a story about what a great parent she was and blah blah. And while I agree the legal system and law enforcement needs serious work, particularly in cross-jurisdiction communication ... In the end I am not convinced the author has actually ever managed to successfully profile a killer - because this book seems to be entirely a litany of the failures of law enforcement and *she* would have been able to do better if people listened. But they don't so possible killers roam free! Also, she is *definitely* not a believer in innocent until proven guilty. Particularly not if *gasp* comic books or D&D are involved, the horrors! ...more

On the other hand, reading the upward and downward spiral of this book was amazing. Despite how much I loathed the main character, he somehow kept manipulating *me* - I hated him but I still wanted him to keep getting away, keep catching lucky breaks, keep achieving success.

Friedman manages to balance out the urgency of what we need to do with ideas and insight that makes it actually seem possible - and he really details how different areas - politics, environment, energy, population, etc - intersect with one another and influence the way the world is heading. I'd give this six stars if I could - normally when I read nonfiction, I alternate between that and fiction, reading a few NF chapters here and there. This book I could not put down....more

What points it lost had to do more with clarity and pacing - at times it seemed rushed and I would have liked more details and examples. There was also the tendency to foreshadow ineffectively - make a big deal about something that was upcoming and then provide scant information, so that I didn't feel it paid off.
Still - very enjoyable to read and worth it to those who enjoy a little personality in their history....more

My mind now feels full to bursting of information on wine, frauds, auctions and Thomas Jefferson. There was so much story, so much drama and interest. And it never got dull, the story kept propelling me on from decanting to carbon-dating and was just - it was great. Highly recommended for anybody who wants to enjoy dipping into a history of wine or who wants to boggle at the amount of money somebody will spend for a bottle of wine they won't even be able to drink. Plus the sheer lengths people can go to to defraud others.
So enjoyable. It also really, really made me want to open a bottle of wine....more
