My first Anthony Berkeley book but certainly not my last. Berkeley is amazingly clever, and I certainly could not pick out the supposed solution. However, the one I thought was best was written by Christianna Brand for the 1979 reissue of this 1929 book.
If you like clever, fair-play mysteries, this is a must-read from the Golden Age. ...more

Oh, dear, I'm in trouble. I love Jane Austen. I love mysteries. I love everything that Kate Reading narrates. This book is my catnip. It was free from the Audible Plus catalog, but there are twelve others that are not free, and I want to hear them all.
Stephanie Barron's characters tend to sound like Austen's, although the text is more modern in style. The whole set-up behind the series is amazingly clever, and Barron adds to the enjoyment by including real people of the period as major characters. And real places. Reading about The Vyne sent me deep into Pinterest for photos and floor plans. The mystery itself was not especially baffling, but never mind. The whole package is worthy of five stars....more

I thought that I had read all of Georgette Heyer's detective stories but stumbled across this one and grabbed it.
Why Shoot a Butler is now my favorite of her mysteries. It’s a complicated plot that I didn’t catch on to until near the end. The hero, Frank Amberley, is a 20th-century version of Ivo Rotherham (Bath Tangle) -- arrogant, rude, and smarter than everybody. He is a young barrister who is condescending to everyone, and they put up with it. I fell a little bit in love with him, as did Heyer I'm sure.
As is typical of Heyer's mysteries, the romance part is minuscule. After mistreating and insulting the heroine throughout, he suddenly proposes at the end. He is no kind of romantic hero, but he's one helluva detective.
The heroine, Shirley Brown, is no pushover. She's keeping secrets that make her look guilty, but since (as we find out later) he fell in love at first sight he looks for ways to find some other culprit.
Fascinating secondary characters abound, and overall I just adored this book....more

Scales of Justice may be my favorite Alleyn book. The characters were well done and the mystery was intriguing. It is “cozy,” but not there. The interplay between Alleyn and Fox is delightful.
Phillip Franks’ narration is spot on. I enjoyed his performance much more than James Saxon, who did the majority of Marsh’s books. Nadia May also narrated several Marsh titles, but her mispronunciation of Alleyn’s name is bothersome. ...more

Listen to your Old Latin Teacher. Don't be like me and wait for years to finally read the one historical romance author who never disappoints her. When OLT consistently gives four and five stars to any author, attention must be paid.
I regret that I do not have the time to write a thorough review, but this is a typical enemies-to-lovers story that is anything but typical. If you like a story with a tough-on-the-outside/mushy-on-the-inside hero, a proud but damaged spinster heroine, witty dialogue, intriguing secondary characters, unlikely twists, and a deeply moving love story -- all in just 264 pages -- you must read this book.
And here's the best part, Jayne Fresina has been writing for years and has more than twenty books that I now get to enjoy. Thank you, OLT....more
