This installment is insidious, blurring the lines between a redemption romance (he’s gone straight, he’s saving her, etc) and the dubious consent aspects of a world that doesn’t value women or monogamy. KA takes some *big swings* with this story, as far as abuse and cheating are concerned. ...more

The climactic events were pretty dated (the villains are one dimensional and slut shading is pretty prevalent), but I loved watching Will and Ellie build their little family. ...more

This was a delightfully funny, romantic, thought provoking fantasy novel. Nathaniel and Elisabeth have a definite HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE VIBE, and while Silas is no Calicifer, he stole my heart as well. I *adore* the backstory behind Elisabeth and how it veers off from the usual Mysterious Orphan expectations. Her upbringing was exceptional, not her birth, how wonderful!
The demon slavery aspect of this story brought to mind Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, if only because that series had changed so fundamentally my perception of this variety of summoning/ enslavement relationship. SORCERY OF THORNS goes its own way, and to be honest I was conflicted about the ending until discussing it with aforementioned bestie. She put forth a theory that I’ve now adopted as head canon, but really, this story leaves enough wiggle room around the issue to provoke thought and discussion. ...more

Perhaps more interesting than prior books, this hero and heroine have fantastic chemistry but undeniably individual fantasies in the bedroom. Rather than being magically, sexually in sync, they articulate their wants and find fulfillment together. A very sexy, genuinely well crafted romance. Eric is an Alpha male with a Beta's soul.
Reread #1 (1/1/15): I've grown lazy of late, finding my new romances amongst the 99 cent deals on Amazon. For every one I finish there are usually two or three that are unreadable at one point or another, most so quickly they don't even make the DNF shelf but rather disappear down the screen of my Kindle, forgotten. This week those "deals" have been so bad, so unreadable, that after five or six false starts I knew I needed to go back to a sure thing. HARD TIME was a perfect fit, even more enjoyable the second time around than when I first finished it.
(8/11/20) A long enough gap that I had forgotten the shape of this hero and heroine. I love the dynamic between them, him needing to feel safely controlled, her needing to feel strong and in charge. Such a gentle but sexy dynamic, honest and raw. ...more

Aurora is definitely a bit more of a firecracker (quicker to take offense or speak her mind), but she shares the sweet practicality that makes Sookie so much fun to read. I had forgotten who the perpetrator was, absolutely chilling. As I recall, Harris did a good job carrying the fall out of these events into book two, as well as keeping Aurora's love life lively... of course, re-reading is the best way to know for sure. Onward to book two!
(9/13/19) I started watching the TV movies of this series. Book Aurora is less charming and more fussy than Candace Cameron-Bure, but her love life is hotter. ...more
