i had to reread sections 3 or 4 times in places just to understand what was happening, to figure out who was saying what, to follow any semblance of plot. everything is buried under confusing descriptions and monikers. some characters have like 5 or 6 different names. the characters are all "doing too much", and the pov switching doesn't help at all. all POVs aside from the main character were dull.
it is a fantastic concept, which kept me interested. its humor was more often cringe than it was fun, but there were definitely parts i enjoyed. the plot, from what i understood, is fun but not always the direction i thought it would go.

The worldbuilding was fantastic, even if a "Magic Power System" wasn't at the forefront of it. I will say, a lot of the plot relied on characters just not openly talking about their situation with others which led to some goofy plotting at points. the final 20% of the book seemed to happen incredibly quickly....more
A great collection of stories in the Cosmere. It was cool to see different planets or worlds that wouldn't otherwise get their own books.
The Hope of EA great collection of stories in the Cosmere. It was cool to see different planets or worlds that wouldn't otherwise get their own books.
The Hope of Elantris ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cute, but doesn't add much to the larger story. but nicely written and sweet ending
The Emperor's Soul ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Probably my favorite. Great story, incredible writing. Really liked the magic system and the stakes. Fun plotting and characters
The Eleventh Metal ⭐️⭐️⭐️ For a Kelsier backstory, this was just fine. It added a bit of deeper history but nothing monumental.
Allomancer Jak & The Pits of Eltania ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Terris annotations for this one are amazing. Very fun and pulpy, very funny.
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fun story that felt very character-driven. Less focus on the magic and more on the relationships. Really well written.
Sixth of Dusk ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved the world building of this one. This was the most magic-forward of the new stories and will be interesting to see how these characters/concepts are used again in the Cosmere.
And I loved the short planet introductions, i just wish there had been more! (Where was the Warbreaker system??)

On its own, I think it had a slow build. Without the knowledge of Cosmere or this falling into a larger picture, I don't know if this could sustain itself on its own.
The build-up was slow and probably about 100 pages too long. And it would have been satisfying to see more at-full-power brawling.
I also missed a bit of magic system hierarchy and clear rules that are so prevalent in Mistborn and Stormlight Archive.
But definitely great, and you can tell Brandon Sanderson has become a much better writer now than when he wrote this....more

It elevates all the previous books in the series before it and establishes deep and rich personas to the main characters - something that was a bit lacking in the prior books (especially #4 and #5, which were very short and pulp-y). Great fight scenes that are always clever and build on both the story, lore in addition to pew pew pew.
I did not expect this one to be so "Cosmere-aware" and I was aboslutely delighted. I have not watched these movies, but I imagine it'd be like if the Iron Man movies were the only ones but suddenly in the fourth one a bunch of heroes jumped into the story and they had to fight Thanos (or whatever)....more

it's giving comic book. it's giving "previously on....". it's giving "baddie of the week". it's like an episodic action adventure comic book / tv show: introduction of some new, nefarious villain (with supervillain names) that our ragtag team of heroes with complicated pasts need to overcome by utilizing their unique combination of powers. A plot, B plot, both resolved by end of episode, overarching C plot that advanced some series-long story. The stakes feel low (especially compared to the world-ending stakes of the first series), but it is still totally fun with great action, fun dialog, one-liners, and the occasional lore drops. Short, pulpy fun. Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmere. it feels very Boy Book in a way that other Cosmere books have not.
(view spoiler)[Whereas the 4th book explored a particularly troublesome twinborn combination, the 5th is all about Kandra gone awry. Because it feels like we're ticking boxes of each fantasy elements (allomancy, feruchemy, kandra) i can only imagine the next books have a focus on Koloss and/or Hemalurgy. (hide spoiler)]
