This book was an informative and amazing piece of literature that I believe that everyone (particularly men) should read. Cho Nam-Joo does a brilliant job in portraying the systematic sexism and misogyny faced not only in Korea but in a lot of other countries. We follow the life of Kim Jiyoung who is an average Korean woman who is just trying to live her life. From a young age we see the sexist remarks and discrimination that she faces and witnesses throughout her life.
Reading about events and issues that Kim Jiyoung faced throughout her life stressed the importance to me that these issues are universal experiences that women have gone through. The issues faced by Kim Jiyoung are issues that I have rather faced myself or know other women who have gone through these issues. This book isn't entirely fiction! Cho Nam-Joo consistently includes statistics within this text to support her arguments and remind readers that this book isn't necessarily a fictional book. This book was released during the #metoo movement in Korea and received a ton of backlash. In fact, many female celebrities in Korea came out during that time stating that they had read this book and in return faced criticism and backlash. Apparently the actors and actresses who acted in the live action remake of this book also faced harsh criticisms and attacks. This just proves how influential and realistic the book truly is.
So I truly recommend this book for everyone to read as it shows a raw and powerful portrayal of woman not only in Korea but around the world. The book is only around 150-200 pages long which isn't much so give it a go <3...more
Well this book did not disappoint because HOLY SHIT!
Taylor Jenkins Reid has fleshed out these characters really well that I truly believed they were real people. This book was so well written that I could visualise everything that was going on since it truly did feel like I reading a biography about Evelyn Hugo. Evelyn Hugo is a very complex character. To be honest she isn't really a good person (she would agree herself). However, I believe that I love her so much because of how flawed she is. Evelyn Hugo is truly so ambitious, intelligent, cunning and manipulative. The way you see how she manipulates her way to get to where she is agihaiuhgagkgk so fucking admirable.
The book offers many thought provoking questions on relationships, fame, love and sexuality. I cant help but wonder how many of the Hollywood celebrities we see today are going through what Evelyn went to. This book truly did help me further understand how complex and meaningful relationships can truly be.
This book was heartbreaking near the end, had me quite literally crying at 3 am. Evelyns journey both personally and through the industry was honestly very engrossing. Her advices throughout the book and the little remarks she made were powerful. “Be wary of men with something to prove.” (Idk why but it just gives me the shivers)
Nevertheless, this book is definitely worth checking out if it's on your tbr.
Also Harry <3 (Love him so so so so so so much)...more
