These really are mermaid (and undersea creature) stories like I've never read before. Even though I was the editor and compiler for this anthology, I was as enchanted and enthralled as, I know, every reader will be by this dazzling collection. I am so proud to be published in an anthology that is bursting with trope-defying stories.
Emily's meticulous worldbuilding, Danielle's mesmerizing meter, Hannah's shining hope, Anna's charming whimsy, Jane's gritty characterization, Olivia's fascinating originality, and my own goofy escapades come together in one very special, 50,000 word collection that explores The Realm Beneath in a way you've never seen before. ...more

Those were my thoughts when, after slogging through an incredibly long audiobook, I got to that incredibly unsatisfying ending.
Claudia Gray certainly isn't a bad writer (that is, her writing style is good) and there were a few really interesting new perspectives on classic Star Wars scenarios (like the Battle of Hoth, Endor, etc). It was really cool to see so many important figures and events from "the grunt in the trenches" - and I always love seeing a TIE Fighter pilot's POV.
But one is left wondering: what is really the point of doing a classic YA romance when you are writing in a galaxy where you can literally tell ANY story and don't have to regulate yourself to the same old / same old romance?
Especially when I wanted an entire story about that lady Wookie who smuggles for the forces of good on her ship The Mighty Oak and knits scarves for her crew because she's got Mama Energy.
Now THAT is a story worth telling. But, sadly, we only get a few tantalizing scenes of that before we're back to youthful angst.
And that's the problem nowadays: too many individuals would rather rehash the same old romantic dialogue and scenarios and let the REAL story, that was actually unique and interesting, slip through their fingers (or paws).
