As David Gemmell’s Legend, The King Beyond The Gate, Waylander shares the same vein of heroic story in that two books; battlefield scenes, besieges, the reluctant heroes were needed in the desperate time, heroes’s deed are more important in defending enemies than its dark past. Gemmell is apt at writing heroes and how they dealt with their inner and outward conflicts in dire circumstances. His heroes have scars, those scars are left on their skin but that isn’t dull their heroic spirit to moralize other people around them.
The writing is concise and straightforward to the point of the story developments. The characters are vivid, admirable of even though they aren’t perfect in their own stories. It was good for me to pick up Waylander because I wanted a more simple writing style of story to read, Waylander is a good choice.
The story is followed after Waylander who has assassinated the king. he has saved the priest, Dardalion, their path were intertwined since then. Waylander met the old man, Orien and he accept the quest of retrieving the legendary armor by him. After that, the story is divided into three parts: Waylander’s quest, Dardalion and the thirty’s defending the fortress and Durmast and Danyal’s story.
In the end, Durmast who was a notorious criminal has saved Waylander, and help retrieving the armor, with Dardalion’s help the fortress and the armor quest were successfully completed. The enemy king and his sorcerers were killed.
The story tells us whenever we can redeem ourselves as if it seems impossible. The book Waylander has done some twist of the chosen one trope. Durmast was the grey character seems not like a hero at all, but after he take the armor, he started to believe he may be the chosen one and redeemed himself. I think Waylander has many similar elements I have seen in the previous two book of Drenai series. The format of the story are from the same model in Drenai books, it is not novel and it is a bit shame. However, it is still a good story to read and a bit surprised for me to finish the story in a good way.
PS: So Far I have read three books from Drenai series. It is hard to pin down which book I like the most in the three books; I like some parts of the books better than the others. Personal rating: 8 stars for Waylander...more

Orcomonics by ZacBetween 3.5 to 3.75 stars. The ending is quite good for me but the rest parts of the story are not quite good to be a 4 stars read.
Orcomonics by Zachary Pike is a satire of capitalism fantasy book, and this is the main reason piqued my curiosity of reading it. This is quite fun for me, especially the recruiting the seven heroes part and in the middle of their quest are entertaining to read. The story realistically elaborates if the familiar medieval fantasy world turns out to be a world is controlling by the company which exploits resources from the fantasy world where monsters’s hoards are values; establish the quest system to select those treasures. Not so fun for heroes in the quests because they are pawns on the board game, a horrendous crime to the monsters or other dwellers who don’t have the citizenship and would be killed by heroes for the hoards. The meanings beneath the surface of the story aren’t humor at all, instead those meanings which are related to capitalism are wrapped in heroic Journeys. However, the story is fun to read and Gorm play a suitable reluctant hero. The Magic systems and the world building would be extended in the later installments of the series. The character’s developments are fun to read, especially Gorm the dwarf was the most plot driven and the funniest character in the book.
When you save the Goblin by a good deed, it means you will have a long term trouble awaiting for you. Gorm the dwarf was failed in the previous mission so that he was going to be retired, then he met a goblin, for the sake of the empathy, he has saved the goblin from the plundered village and brought him to the big city Andarun to have the goblin’s citizenship paper. But he was escorted by the city guards and brought to the hero guild, in there he faced two choices, to be punished by violating the law of bring a shadowkin to the city or join the quest. He and his square Goblin and other heroes set off to find the Elven Marbles and bring them to the rightous owner.
From the beginning, Gorm saved the Goblin which is the obvious clue of what will the story develop; without a doubt Form’s good deed forged the Ill-fated quest to the Orc village. The quest is a sham, it all for undercover what the king actually wanted. Use heroes as his tools to have the right eliminating the Orc villages. Here the author shatters the quest trope and intricately develops the relationship between Gorm and the Goblin. Other characters’s relationships for me are just fun to read. But the ending Gorm witnessed what he and his team brought doom to the Orc village and starting fight against the system. Goblin as the non-heroic gene character with his innocence and the relationship with Gorm make the ending so strong. It’s not a complicated fantasy book but with some brooding questions about Capitalism and what is to be a hero? Overall, this is a good and fun fantasy book to read....more
Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson is a comical science fiction for adults. Callaham’s bar is at the end oA surprising 4.25 stars read.
Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson is a comical science fiction for adults. Callaham’s bar is at the end of time and space where his customers are from everywhere in the galaxy. Time travelers, aliens, murders etc. The story is light on tone but heavy on the themes; those characters who told their stories that have burdens or regrets in their life. They wanted to share their stories with others in order to get secrets or stories out of their chest. Callahan the bartender always play a role of a listener and advisor to his customers who want to tell their stories. I wanted a light read and found the book is a short story collection with humors; although I didn’t expect that the themes are quite heavy such as the two time travelers’s stories. The one who is from the future and he lost everything in his life. He was exiled from the future and went to the saloon, the ending is quite fun to see the time traveler’s gun isn’t loaded but he didn’t know. Another one who is from the past is inherited the telepathic power from his family with his brother. They both have been dealing with the hereditary aptitude when their power appeared in life. After Callahan gave him the advise of contacting with his brother and learn how to coexist the powers together. Both the stories have heavy themes and the characters has been dealing with their own issues as their fights with enemies.
I like how the stories were being told and the funny dialogues in each stories. Each stories has different themes that characters introduce stories within. Most stories have merry ending, except Unnatural Causes that is one of my favorite stories in the book. The character who was convicted the crime then later he served in the military service in Vietnam, after what he has witnessed what was the war in Vietnam, he was changed and after he came back to life he was hard to fit in the society; so that he went to Callahan’s bar to consult a cure to his PTSD.
Raksha the green fur alien who revealed the most hideous truth about how Krundai has been manipulating humans by propagandas, technology developments etc. Raksha think Krundai don’t like violences instead training the animals which were going to be butchered by themself. It reminded me of Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy book 2, in the end of universe’s restaurant, the cow introduced its body to the consumers. When I knew Raksha is Adolf Hitler, I was laughing. Because numerous science fictions have used Hitler as a character for satire. I think if Hitler knew he would be used as a character in many science fictions, he might be aghast about that. The Iron Dream also uses Hitler as a representation of satire of the history. It is quite funny that Hitler is a prominent figure in Science fictions.
Unnatural Courses is the most darkest story in the book, but From Callaghan’s POV most people or aliens have their chances to be saved or redeemed. The bar is like a self- half group for those traumatized customers to telling their stories to others and finding the solutions to the problems.
it is an unexpectedly fun read that mixing social issues and political satire in an extremely fun and dismal world. There in Callahan’s bar is always a place to rest and replenish energy to face next day. ...more

This t The Pinhoe Egg is the six installment of Chrestomensi series, continue with cat being an apprentice of the Nine Lifer enchanter, Chrestomensi. This time he discover an egg by coincidence and he will discover the secrets were hidden in the wood by Chrestomensi’s castle. Another protagonist, Marianne who was trying to save her family from the wicked havocs which she thought had all been done by Gammer who always commended other people to do what she requires. Two story lines are divided into two parts, one is Cat, another one is Marianne. From both side we can see the traditional family which had been remonstrating to another nearby family, Faeleighs. In this book from both Pinhoe and Farleighas POV, they both were retaliating with each other. Chrestomensi started investigating what was about The Pinhoe family’s secrets and histories of one of the oldest witch families. In addition, the hidden one was the victim who were confined by the witch family. This book has the most background stories that compares to the previous installments. Not like first book, Chanted Life, it provides the histories of the witch family and an inborn magic “Dwimmer” what is the misunderstanding and discrimination between magic creatures like Unicorns and griffins among those witch family. Due to this point, the Chrestomensi World has been expanded more details and starts connecting with magic creatures, interaction with more characters from witch families.
Sadly, this is the final installment in Chrestomensi series, but Wynne Jones proffer us readers a magic world to be immersed in. About characters, Cat becomes more active in this book rather than in Chanted Life; because his sister was controlling and manipulating Cat until he found out he need to take in charge of his life. I see Cat as a grown character makes many his own decisions to save situations. And now He has animal companions, unlike In Chanted Life, he was dismal in loneliness. It is good to see that he starts having a meaningful life of his own without his sister in his life. This time , I can imagine that smile on his face, not a grimace, but an actual smile. ...more

The story isListened to Audiobook at 70% before switched to Ebook version. Carl’s Doomsday Scenario is still as entertaining as Dungeon Crawler Carl. The story is more focus on the duo, Carl and Donut; the development of their relationship is strengthened more than the first book, the bond between the duo is visible that to be seen throughout the book. I must mention that the audiobook version is superb, the audio narrator is capable of doing multiple voices to characters. The narrator orchestrates the story successfully, a delightful read especially in audiobook version.
The story is divided into two parts, the first part is Donut was enchanted, and Carl wanted to save her, and thus he followed the order of the women who has enchanted Donut. The saving Donut mission turn out to have a happy ending; not only save Donut also the Circus and its crew members. Mongo (Carl’s dinosaur pet) also played a crucial role to protect Donut from the roaming mobs.
The second half of the story is Carl for the sake of pity to pick up the side quest that which Mordecai has already warned him not to take. He didn’t expect the side quest turned out to be a massively massacre event to all the crawlers in the epicenter of the gem( a bomb). Crawler has saved both Donut and himself but triggered the second magic bomb. It has caused much more dramatic effects to Carl and other crawlers. (I wondered why Carl didn’t get any pants on him so far in the story until near the end of the story that I realized Carl was meant to be naked till the end of the story) After Carl and Donut were transported to the interview, (Carl was still naked) they realized more info about gods, their patrons etc. Especially, his patron reminded him to keep an eye on Hekla and someone may kill him for the reason of being Donut’s manager.
Book Two of Carl and Donita’s adventures is pure fun to read. The audiobook version adds bonus point to the reading experience! The story read like adventure, as the duo knew more of the game which they are playing in; Mongo has more chance to be developed as a character. Mordecai was playing his NPC role and drinking in the story. Carl Doomsday Scenario was an effortless and fun read to me!...more

It's ambient coziness which surounding readers with fragment breads and cakes, aromatic beers and cuisines, and most important, the smell of old volumes from bunch of books! This is how Travis Baldree present us a story without a magnitudes of dramatic events or dramas, while reading it, to be immersed in a atmospheric refurbishing book shop.
The plot is not the focus in the story, characterization and characters are more prominent than plot's developments. So Some readers may consider the plots are predictable. If you concentrate on the Murk , where a remote seashore town is displayed with a slice of life and amusing people living in town, you won't care of simpleness in the story.
I think the end of the story has a good point of telling that: sometimes, people met at the wrong time; after departure, we won't meet on the crossroad again; but doesn't mean that we won't find the right person in the right time. Whatever the experience was not what we expect the result would be, however at least we had the sentimental memories even it just last transient seconds. ...more

This is a book for younger audience, so that Il didn't realize that I would like The Wee Free Men more than I'd expected, until I started reading it. This is a book for younger audience, so that I thought maybe right now it does not suit for me to read, especially I start reading grimdark fantasy books now =.= However, I had some connection with the protagonist, Tiffany Aching who was a gallant girl searching for her young brother, when he was captured by a fairy/elf queen. Tiffany is a likable character that easily fall in love with; she is stalwart enough to carry on her journey to the far away fairyland where had been dominating by a cruel villain. In there, your dreams would be nightmares when dream-spinning dromes are manipulating your dreams. This is profoundly interesting and new in Discworld books, also Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg appeared near the end of the book, another surprise and not very surprise for me because the story is about witches.

Carpe Jugulum is the twenty third Discworld book, a vampire fantasy book. It is very interesting to read how Terry Pratchett subverts vampire tropes. Carpe Jugulum is the twenty third Discworld book, a vampire fantasy book. It is very interesting to read how Terry Pratchett subverts vampire tropes. Vampires aren’t afraid of garlics, crucified and sacred speeches etc, Even though they still need to be invited to get in the houses. Carpe Jugulum is Vampires first time appear in Discworld books. I think they would shine In other Discworld books as well. But I think the most interesting thing Terry Did is that the conflicts the vampires from Unberwald with Granny Weatherwax. And in the end of the story, readers will find out that it is who Weatherwax messed up with the vampires!
The story is the king in Lancre has invited guests to his kingdom, and vampires they were invited to name Magrat’s daughter. Soon Nanny and Agnes found out that the king’s guests are vampires and those vampires don’t want to leave Lancre, they wanted to stay there forever. So this time Nanny and Agnes need to find a way to banish those vampires. Without Granny this time ( Nanny, Agnes, Margaret went to Weatherwax’s cave to look for her help but she refused to help that time) they found out the situation was tense to dealt with the vampires.
Eventually, Granny still showed up and confronted with the vampires, but she got a bite. But she surprisingly overcome the transformation, she didn’t become a vampire; furthermore, the vampires they were infested by Granny’s virus. They were behaving like Granny Weatherwax, thinking like her . A disaster for the vampires for sure.
I think the centre theme of this book is what you believe is your own business but do not force others to believe what you believe. Oats is the priest, with Granny, on the different perspectives of how things work, they argued about beliefs in the amusing also series conversations. Vampires are the villains not only they wanted to dominate Lancre kingdom, also tried to brainwashing other people’s thoughts. It is very common in real life, at least in my opinion , I have seen many people do this for a long time.
This is definitely a fun read, we see more characters like Oats the priest of Om, Igor the zombie server of the vampires, Agnes’s other persona, Perdita etc. They are interesting characters in Carpe Jugulum. unfortunately, this is the last book in Witches series. I hope I can see more those characters in the rest of Discworld books. The Truth is also about vampires and thus I am excited to read that book!
Read in the audiobook about 80 percents, then switched to the Ebook. The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett is the Twenty second Discworld book, in DiRead in the audiobook about 80 percents, then switched to the Ebook. The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett is the Twenty second Discworld book, in Discworld sub Rincewind series. This book clearly is about Australia, and its cultures and ecosystem. Even you don’t know anything about Australia, you will still enjoy the story which Rincewind inadvertently to be the hero in the prophecy and coincidentally has saved the day. Rincewind is one of my favorite Discworld characters. Even he was too conveniently being used in the Discworld books to be a reluctant hero, but still like his adventures and showing his disabilities of being a wizard. The other wizards have gone to the island to seeking the cure of the librarian’s malady. They are still hilarious in the story, especially when they were trying to give the hint of the birth concept to the god. The dialogues seem to be hilarious even when they were having disputes. The evolution is not a simple thing to do, especially for gods to do the job, the result would potentially be disastrous.
The story follows Rincewind was magically sent to a mysterious continent, he met a kangaroo whose name is Scrappy. He’be told Rincewind that in the prophecy, he will save the land from the drought. To Rincewind’s acknowledgment, he won’t be that person. And it was dubious that the kangaroo was talking to him about the heroism; he soon discovered that the land had bizarre phenomenon that was beyond his recognition. On the other hand, the Unseen Universe’s wizards were trying to cure the librarian’s malady. So that they have used the window in the bathroom to enter another island which was exited about millions years ago. In there they’ve found a god who was programing the evolution process but without the proper knowledge of revolution. After they told the god things about the evolution (Whitlow telling the god of how reproduction work is quite fun) then they left the island. Meanwhile still on the continent, Rincewind noticed that the land was lack of water for a long time, also he became a thief who stole a sheep; then he was lock in the jail. But he found the message on the cell’s ceiling, so that he easily left the jail after. After The wizards left the god, they floated in an island (on the same continent as Rincewind was staying but millions years ago) where met the creator who was crafting creatures on the island. The librarian who found the bullroarer, and its magic effect on the island’s environment. Unfortunately, for the sake of the magic of the bullroarer, they were frozen for about million year. After Rincewind was rescued by the luggage, he found Fourecks University and met his cousin, Bill Rincewind. Together they were investigating the brewery where seemed to be haunting. And found out the frozen wizards and the Bullroarer. Rincewind coincidentally triggered the bullroarer’s magic and summoned the wet(rain) and saved the island.
Overall, it’s Rincewind’s last adventurous journey in Rincewind series. I quite enjoyed the story with Rincewind, I think the sub-series may not be the best in Discworld series. However, I think Rincewind is the character with Twoflower are the central characters in Discworld that make me feel sentimental and nostalgic. I would like to see more story about the duo. The Last Continent discusses evolution, aboriginal culture in very amuse way. Although I must mention that the use of Rincewind is a bit more than the necessary. And other wizards were very coincidentally intertwined with Rincewind’s story. (Last time Rincewind was sent to the continent by the UU’s wizards in Interesting Time) Still I am fond of Discworld series, especially Rincewind sub series, I think his adventures are very unique in a way that put me in laughs and retrospections at the same time. When Rincewind has triggered Bullroarer, the rain was pouring down that there is a perfect lyric line in Down Under to describe the scene: you’d better run, you’d better to take a cover. However this time, Rincewind was not running away anymore, he was going back to his home, Ankmorpo.
P.S: the Kangaroo Scrappy wears a wizard hat and hold a beer in its hand is such an iconic figure in Discworld books! ...more

I Think this book mentions that people kill unicorn not due to the commercial value of the furs or the horns, because they believe after killing unicorn this kind of legendary creatures would find the meaning of life which those people are not able to find by themselfs.

This is Tad Williams's debut and It already showed that Tad Williams is capable of weaving myths and legends in the stories. This is the shining spark of Tad Williams's fantasy books! Like dogs and cats's long histories of anathema, cats's first home and the legend of Firefoot etc.. I think It is appealing to me that the story is full of mysteries and stories about animals. Their wild lives of living in woods or burrows. They are very stalwart to the harmful and malign environment. Sometimes, they fight with their nemesis, sometimes they collaborate as alliances. In this book, Tailchaser's song, kittens have been listening to elder's stories about the legends and fables, for them it would be the fact that those entities and incredulous lands has existed, and this is why Fritti, our protagonist always wanted to seize the chances of exploring the unknown territories for cats, even his first great adventure started due to finding Hushpad.
I really appreciate how Tad Williams deals with the ending, and I already knew that Hushpad wasn't captured by the evil, boneguards or the villains. She was captured by M'an which means human and inevitably, she has chosen to be in the thrall as human's pet. Fritti's finally realized that his heart desire isn't about a comfortable shelter, more is about exhilarating adventures, with his comrades, with the stories would be sung by many cats. After finished reading Tailchaser's Song, I confidently believe that there is a world where cats are living outside human's territories, and have numerous adventures to their kin; human just one of exotic legends for them, not their master or reliance. This book isn’t all about Oggy, but you are hardly not to notice that she is the spotlight in Maskerade. Her characteristics no doubt are amplified in the book, which proffer a fresh and interesting reading experience that which is different from Granny Weatherwax.
The story is about one of the coven members who was retired from Granny’s adventures. Granny has decided to go to Anka Morpork’s to recruit a new member. She found the potential witch in Anka-Morport opera. There was going to have a attractive show to audiences, but the theater’s owner was frightened of the news about the ghost who was going to sabotage his business. Granny and Orggy both were forced to investigate the Opera ghost; soon they had realized that not only one ghost but two… The story is quite interesting to see Granny half-coerce, half-persuade people in the theater, but Oggy is much sophisticatedly doing her job than before, slightly disturbing what other characters were rehearsing or doing. She definitely outshine Granny this time.
