First off, frankly, there was no reason for this book to be written, but I'm still glad there was. The end of Bird Box had this semblance of hope, but the book was ultimately very bleak. In this novel, that takes place twelve years after the end of Bird Box, Malorie, Tom and Olympia are complex characters with their own motivations and the whole novel is about the progress of society. There's actually a lot of adventure and movement between places in this book and it's really different than Bird Box. While I really liked the ending, it still didn't answer all of the questions I wanted answered. It also didn't scare me or make me as uncomfortable as Bird Box did. Bumping this down to 4 stars. While it's true that this was the first book to ever scare me, I do NOT recommend the audiobook version. The narrator makes Malorie and Olympia sound so whiny and annoying (as well as the kids).

This book is the first book that's ever scared me. The atmosphere was so vivid and I fell in love with the story. Josh Malerman is a new autobuy author....more
