I tried with all my might to push though and keep going with this story. At the end of the day, it wasn't so much the writing that was weak and not working, it was the whole story and the voice in which the author told a vampire story for me.
I like my vampires evil, bad, and very alpha with a hint of a Sadist just ready to burst from the surface. What I got was a very whiny, very Edward Cullen like vampire that was very self loathing and unwilling to really embrace what he was.
This not only was a vampire tale, but a Snow White retelling, and I wasn't really clicking with that idea. The 'evil' queen, wasn't bad enough. I mean the evil queen and Maleficent are notorious baddies, and I just didn't quite get where the evil was coming from. I know the evil step mother was there, I just wasn't afraid of her.
As a whole, I didn't quite mesh with the authors voice. I wasn't getting what I expected, and I had to end the story where I did.

I can't. I just can't do this anymore. I tried and I kept on going when I realized that not only did I not really like any of the characters in the book, but the writing was quite horrible. I always knew that when I start taking notes on a book it is either really really good or exceptionally bad. If you go take a look at my review ratings average its quite high, I pretty much enjoy everything I read--but this--was quite terrible.
I want to say there was potential here. But honestly there is potential if the author properly went through the revision process of her book. If I touch on this first let me explain. It reads like the author wrote a series of scenes with no transition and just put it all together in a book. Here is an example: At the end of the chapter Ava talks about going up to take a shower. At the beginning of the next chapter she wakes up and takes a shower. Then she thinks in the next paragraph how she needs to take a shower at the event she's going to, then on the next page she talks about taking a shower after the work is done. So basically Ava took a shower four times in under 24 hours. With proper revisions, editors, and critiques this would've been caught. This book could have been shaved off by about half by pulling out useless words, repeating the same behavior, and stop cycling the characters through the same behavior over and over again. (Basically wash, rinse, repeat) thats all this book actually does.
So now, the characters and why they are so repulsive.
I would like to know why and how a female author would write such horrible female characters. Ava basically acts like a bratty 16 years old until she sleeps with Jesse, then she becomes likable, and then Jesse starts acting like a bratty 10 years old boy. The whole tantrum about her leaving while she's in the shower and he's literally huffing out "NO!" "I don't want you to go!" I was expecting him to cross his arms over his chest, pout, and stomp his foot. My daughter who's 11 and has a learning disability acts more mature than this when she doesn't want to do something and I make her.
I actually likes Jesse very much up until 26%. But for the life of me I couldn't figure out why he liked Ava. Then it all became clear. It was arousal. Yep. All he talks about is how pretty she is and when she says you don't know me, he replies with, I know your beautiful. Forget how horrible of a person she is, she's pretty so I have to keep her so no one else can have her.
Then you have this whole obsession with age. How can you miss it? It's beat into the readers brain with the subtly of a sledgehammer. It actually is very obvious that the author has an insecurity with being above the age of 30 and considers that 'old' she's emoting through the writing and you can tell when comments are made like "OH he's 40 what an old man." When did 40 become being an old man? I know 40 year olds that are healthier than me at 33 and run marathons. It was annoying. It was so annoying I contemplated writing the author a ragey email. And it takes her FOREVER to ask about Sarah. How does she get girlfriend from any of that. Jesse all but ignores that woman every time she's around, how does that scream girlfriend.
Don't even get me started on her 'black talk' the only black characters says "S'all good." I thought it was a one off, but no, that's literally like all John says and I was insulted for every single one of my african american friends. Because they DON'T talk like this and are highly educated people.
When it comes down to it, after googling interviews from the author last night I realized the author was just emoting herself into Ava. She's not a very likable woman, and I can see alot of her (there are video interviews) in Ava. I didn't get their relationship and I started to see this hump, run, yell, and hump pattern and it just wasn't worth wasting my time over.
I get that everyone likes different books but I just don't get the hype. I got the hype with 50 shades but this literally reads as 50 shades fan fiction, you can see where the author literally rewrote scenes to fit into her book. I refuse to be insulted by this book anymore. I'm moving on. I have too much to read and this was a terrible book as a whole.

I was so totally excited to start this one. I mean, it literally felt like X-Men stuff. People suddenly started being born with powers, they manifested at puberty.
HECK YEAH!
Well, that was about all the heck yeah you got out of me after I realized how totally depression, boring, and pointless this all was. Basically, I felt like this was a book full of depressed teens, that although born with mutated DNA (some could even start fires) they allowed themselves to be held captive by the government and experimented on, apparently, gang raped? I fell like this was implied by one of the lead females friends and its why she was no longer her friend. Or it could have been a vivisection? Not enough was clear, I mean the implied wasn't even clear and your left trying to decipher an ancient tomb of secrets that about half way through, you just don't care about anymore.
The characters are all weak, because I could not believe that a group of X-men like kids couldn't escape this fate. Oh, and this mutation in the worlds children brought about economic collapse?
I atleast have to believe my dystopians and fall in love with my female heroes. This one, was not one of those books!

Unfortunately, I'm unable to finish this story. They characters are not compatible for me. From the first page I disliked everyone in the story and I feel like its only getting worse. I've attempted two more chapters since I made this choice. The female lead comes off weak and pathetic, and the lead male is whiny and pathetic for following after her. I would rather not rate this story and not finish it.

Ok, it is very very very RARE that I want to rage on a book. I am one of those people that just reads for fun. I a lot of the time enjoy books that NONE of my friends do and just allow the story to envelop me as a whole.
Then there came Fierce, which turned me into a ragey beast woman, who actually questioned the whole of the publishing world for a moment.
Now, I'm not anti-self publishing.
I'm very PRO self publishing and read loads of self published authors and support, share, wrap them up in my own personal fangirl blanket and nourish them.
However, I feel like there are some authors that don't listen to ANYTHING. I even question if they hired editors, because no WAY editor would let slide, the type of stuff that was in this book.
Let me explain.
I was going to read this whole book. Honestly, if I'm gonna rage, I want the full encompassing reason to rage. However, I couldn't. I just could not waste another second on a book that was so poorly constructed. Some may call this a 'bully review' Ok, I'll let you have my bully review and I'll raise you head hopping, poorly constructed characters, and internal dialogue that sounded like I read reading Dr. Seuss.
You can go ahead and say I'm being mean.
That's fantastic for you that you loved this book. I thought I would too, the little teaser images were very misleading. As was the blurb.
You get this big impression that this is a story about the a-typical virgin and this awesomely alpha cage fighter.
Um, NO!
Most of the characters are stupid. They are made even more stupid when their inner dialogue sounds like "No I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them sam I am."
I'm really NOT playing this up, I have examples:
"I mean, I've known for a long time people don't really like to sit next to me. I don't really care about the reason. I don't care at all that they don't want to sit next to me. I like being on my own. I have Evie. Enough friends for me." 22% Loc. 791
Does she smell bad? Does she have bad breath? Does she has some sort of deformity that is repelling people? People just don't, not want to sit next to you, most people don't care!
"His words make my insides broil." 22% Loc. 814
Broil? Really? You sure you want to use this word?
"But I don't come any closer. I don't move one muscles." 23% Loc.827
I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them sam I am.
"My groin clenches, and my clit thumps." 23% Loc. 842
I just... I can't... Yeah....
"I want to give them back what they gave to me, and this is the only way to do it.
I want to help them. I want to give back to them." 25% loc. 916
You sure? You want to give back to them. I'm not quite clear, you didn't quite SAY IT ENOUGH IN THREE SENTENCES!
"I gasp. "Oh my God! You've read Harry Potter? God, it's been ages since I last saw that book." 36% loc. 1278
Ages? Really? Since Harry Potter? The damned last movie JUST came out on free on demand and they still have a Harry Potter display in every Barnes and Noble. Ages you say? What are we doing here. I don't understand. I was close to done at this point anyways.
So, those are a FEW of my examples. However, the author likes to post on kindle boards were are all lying meanies and she didn't write these things. So I made sure to include the percent and the location on my kindle.
I'm not done. Not by a long shot.
So, like I said we got lied to in all these fantastical teasers. Hunter. This highly marketed Alpha Male? HA! No! Hunter spends 99.9% of his time beat up, limping into his dorm, and grunting like a cave man. Grunting does not an alpha male make. Top that off when the other 1% when he's acting human. He's just dumb. Like meat head worst kind of male dumb.
Then we have Autumn. This self professed virgin and geek. Well, she doesn't act like a geek. She just acts like a doormat that allows her, lesbian? BFF to control every other friendship she has other than her own, so she can keep Autumn in her little bubble so she can secret lust after her?
This storyline is there, just really really poorly done. The storyline is just that though. You have no effing clue what is going on 99.9% of the time. And the romance? Nope, there is NO ROMANCE! The characters act one way one page then totally different the other. None of the secondary characters are even likable for you to give a crap about them. Then the BFF is running off with this chick randomly and leaving Autumn alone then yelling at her when she finds out Autumn was with Hunter.
Excuse me, I need to bang my head against the wall.
Ok, I'm done, if I missed anything, I'm sure another reviewer will pick it up. It has been awhile since I read this and to be honest, I'm shocked I remembered as much as I did. I think my anger kept it fresh in my brain.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I mean I never want to give a bad review to a book that was handed to me by the author. It is not reasonable for everyone to like every book they pick up.
Unfortunately, for my reading desires, this book didn't quite hit the mark. The world building didn't exist. We are thrust into a world with alternate dimensions, I got that it was to kick out the vampires. What I didn't get was the chemistry between the two leads.
Once they actually meet, and he stops creeping on her, they have a intimate scene and I pretty much skimmed it. The moments I was supposed to find tense, I didn't. I had to give up when I did because when I skim a sex scene, that means I'm not feeling it.
The potential was there, the execution fell flat.
