Er ist jedoch seit seiner Kindheit begeistert von der Natur vor unserer Haustür und hat auch Ökologie studiert. In seinem mit wunderschönen Illustrationen aus der Cramers Gallery of Nature ausgestatteten Buch nimmt Eulburg uns mit in die Lebensräume unseres Landes, die unendlich viele Schätze bergen, die wir oft gar nicht bewusst wahrnehmen. Er erzählt uns von der wundersamen Transformation des Ameisenlöwen und verrät uns Kuriositäten, von denen wir noch nie gehört haben. Wusstet ihr beispielsweise, dass auch männliche Mäuse singen, um die Damenwelt für sich zu gewinnen (was wir allerdings nicht wahrnehmen können). Dass Bücher und Buchstaben so heißen, weil Germanen Runen in Scheite aus Buchenholz ritzten, also „Buchen-Staben“? Ich könnte hier unzählige Beispiele für spannende Fakten aus der Natur aufzählen, aber lest das Buch doch einfach selbst! Es macht wirklich Riesenspaß, ich habe mich keine Sekunde gelangweilt!
Es ist aber keine heile Welt, aus der Eulberg berichtet. Es bedarf viel stärkerer und koordinierterer Bemühungen, um unsere Naturschätze zu bewahren. So enthält das Buch auch eine Mahnung: „Einen Konsens über die Frage „Was ist Naturschutz“ wird es wohl niemals geben, und ich stelle bei meinen eigenen Bemühungen immer wieder fest, dass der größte Feind des Naturschützers sogar oft der andere Naturschützer ist“. Es geht weniger um eine Prognose, welche Arten die Zerstörung ihres Lebensraumes und die menschengemachte Klimakatastrophe überleben werden, sondern darum, warum es so wichtig ist, die Biodiversität und damit möglichst viele Arten, inklusive solcher, die wir nicht besonders mögen, zu retten. Das gilt auch für Parasiten. Das ist die wichtigste Erkenntnis, die ich aus diesem Buch mitnehme, welch ungeahnte Rollen die verschiedenen Arten, selbst die schauderhaftesten Ergebnisse der Evolution, wie etwa der Guineawurm oder der früher auch bei uns verbreitete Spulwurm spielen. Es wird diskutiert, wie wir die Rettung bewerkstelligen können, mit welchen Schwierigkeiten dies verbunden ist (Stichwort Triage) und ob eine eingeschränkte Nutzung sinnvoller wäre als ein Totalschutz. Wie der deutsche Titel es schon sagt: David Attenborough ist wohl der berühmteste und angesehenste Naturfilmer der Welt. In diesem Buch schildert er neben den Umweltsünden, deren Zeuge er während seiner langen Karriere wurde, wie er zum Dokumentarfilmer wurde, und erzählt von Wegbegleitern wie Bernhard Grzimek. Das Buch ist in drei Teile geteilt, die jeweils der Vergangenheit und der aktuellen Situation, dem, was uns droht, und dem, was wir dagegen tun können, gewidmet sind. Vor allem der zweite Teil ist absolut niederschmetternd und hatte mich schon am Punkt der Verzweiflung. Ich würde mal behaupten, ich bin ganz gut informiert über die Klimakrise, aber was Attenborough da alles gnadenlos beschreibt, lässt kaum noch Hoffnung. Im dritten Teil macht er dann aber Vorschläge, mit der die Menschheit vielleicht noch zu retten sein wird. Das hat meine Verzweiflung noch einmal gelindert, aber ich muss sagen, ich bin da eher pessimistisch. Lesen sollten dieses Buch jedenfalls alle....more
Wir kennen Sir Arthur Conan Doyle vorrangig für seine Kriminalgeschichten um den genialen Ermittler Sherlock Holmes. Auch hat sich herumgesprochen, dass der Schriftsteller und Mediziner einen Hang zum Spiritismus hatte. Weniger bekannt ist, dass sich Conan Doyle als junger Medizinstudent als Schiffsarzt auf einem Walfänger betätigte.
Unser Glück ist, dass er dort Tagebuch führte und uns seine Eindrücke von seiner Reise in die Polarregion hinterlassen hat. Der vorliegende Band enthält neben Conan Doyles Aufzeichnungen eine Einleitung der Herausgeber, zahlreiche Abbildungen des Originaltagebuchs inklusive Conan Doyles Zeichnungen sowie einen ausführlichen Anhang mit Essays über dessen Reise ins Nordpolarmeer, den Walfang und die Tierwelt der Arktis.
Eins dürfte klar sein: Für Tierliebhaber ist das Buch mitunter keine unproblematische Lektüre. Zwar äußert Conan Doyle Schuldgefühle und Mitleid für die erlegten Wale und Robben, aber er hält sich nicht bei der Beschreibung der Jagd zurück und lässt auch erkennen, dass er doch mit Begeisterung bei der Arbeit war. Denn seine Arbeit beschränkte sich keineswegs auf die des Schiffarztes.
Dennoch ist das Tagebuch ein interessantes und wichtiges Zeitdokument, das durch das schriftstellerische Talent des Autors abgesehen von dem oben genannten Aspekt vergnüglich zu lesen ist. Vor allem Conan Doyles Humor ist hervorzuheben: Mich hatte das Buch bereits durch seinen Titel als Leserin gewonnen: Mit welcher Unbekümmertheit er berichtet, er sei heute dreimal ins Polarmeer gefallen! Seine Kameraden gaben ihm daraufhin auch den Spitznamen „großer Eistaucher“. Überhaupt fügte sich der Autor problemlos in die Mannschaft ein und erzählt allerlei Anekdoten von seinen Kameraden.
Zusammen mit dem Zusatzmaterial – vor allem den Abbildungen der Originalseiten des Tagebuchs – stellt das Buch eine absolut lohnende Lektüre dar, solange man nicht über die Abschlachterei vor allem der Robben nachdenkt....more
