I have seen a lot of reviews of this book which tend to focus on the apocalyptic childhood which Westover seems to have had - at least in her words. W
I have seen a lot of reviews of this book which tend to focus on the apocalyptic childhood which Westover seems to have had - at least in her words. Without taking into consideration certain moments where it is clear that many different discussions on a certain topic were condensed into one single episode which spelled out a point for the reader, I don't actually think that her childhood seems impossible. Cults have a notoriously horrific way of making people do things which to outsiders seem idiotic. No doctors? Not even when suffering horrific burns? Living an isolated, confined life where everything is done in accordance to what the patriarch of the family believes? How can that be? system - but they will most certainly not rob you of the raw material that is already there. Based on the way she writes, I believe her story is real. The raw material was there. I did take it with a grain of salt - but then I think every autobiography should be taken like that, as any story about the self is necessarily biased.
