Unbelievable tripe. The main character is intensely unlikeable, but doesn't seem to be meant to be perceived as such. His wife is more of an NPC than Unbelievable tripe. None of the characters are well written, but the female characters seem not even two-dimensional. Full of infodumps. And for a "rogue merchant", this guy sure seems to be doing anything but commerce. Is he meant to be seen as a charming rogue with his scams? If so, it doesn't work....more

I read a few chpters, which were mind-numbingly boring, then skipped ahead and did not find much improvement, then read the last two chapters. The ending is certainly... something. I guess I liked it, although it made me physically nauseous. The few pages that I skimmed in thr middle of the I found interesting enough (the girls on E, Amma's tantrums, John), but I just could not make myself suffer through the entire book. I know something happened with Richard, but I absolutely do not care what that was. I know Camille is troubled with her drinking and cutting and tough childhood, and I don't care. At all. It's not a good sign if instead of wanting to devour the book to get to the ending, one just wants to read the conclusion of all the mindless meandering that comes before. I could have enjoyed this as a long-ish short story (or as a movie), but a whole book is just too much....more
