Jack: *explains very complicated theological concepts in less than a thousand words in a way that actually makes sense and is...not heretical, probably, i’m not a theologian.*

the choice to explore the phenomenon of Public Shamings, known today in the distant future of 2020 as being “cancelled” through a series of stories of people who know the ropes of Shame — the long history in the US of public shamings and the purpose (making the cost of breaking the law too high) and how social media gives the voiceless the power to determine who’s infractions were Morally Okay Enough gives a very clear picture of the current moment. It was very engaging and elucidating.
some of the stories about the Twitter Mob were more disturbing than others, but if I may answer a few of his questions for him:
1. why do these stories disturb him more than other dark stories he’s worked on? because he could at any moment become someone being publicly shamed — the worst thing anyone did in this book was probably shoddy journalism or like, had weird sexual proclivities. That’s the worst offense, which is easily avoidable, but everyone else had a momentary lapse in judgement where they thought they were being funny or else doing the right thing. i think i’m funny and right all day long. pretty much everyone does. the other part of the answer is that he has taken part of the twitter mob. he has been a part of the madness that has demanded people’s jobs. he feels like the mob could turn on him. i felt a little put off that he still at the end was like: i never participate in twitter shamings now unless the person has committed a crime bad enough, but that is a critique of him as a person and not of the book. 2. why do people participate in this? the contagion of crowds is nonsense, probably, but people do still obviously act differently in a Mob than they do on an individual level. probably, and it was a little weird to see him not even posit this as an explanation when he did spend time debunking there Stanford Prison Experiment and the Madness of Crowds as Social Contagion, but there’s a loss of accountability in mobs, especially online ones. whatever you think about JK Rowling, it’s much easier to justify sending her child porn online if you’re not the only one doing it and you think it’s anonymous. (did not fact check the claim that people were replying to her tweets in June with CP after she published that paper).
like this is a book about disproportionate reactions. some people, celebrities, will be fine when the twitter mob comes after them. honestly, if you handle it well enough, and stop trying to make Public Apologies, you will probably come out the other side, but i cannot understand why anyone thinks a proportionate reaction to someone making a distasteful joke is to like, immediately call a woman a cunt and send her death threats. it’s not that hard to simply NOT do that and mind your own business. ...more

I think this course could be more successful if not so much was tackled in it, and he was a little more passionate about his feelings on certain subjects, but also, it’s for a much broader audience than any of my SJLA philosophy courses. For that reason, it’s definitely a course I recommend listening to, Breyer makes the subject matter interesting and accessible, but I found myself wanting to go in a different direction with some of the subjects and wanting to ask questions that would be a little in the weeds for an audio-lecture series even if I could still be in SJLA (honestly, it’s very sad). Also, the lecture on anger was lacking and instead I suggest reading Rebecca DeYoung’s glittering vices. ...more
