Well. Not quite. Did get the chance to see this spectacle live and it's annoying, but I am drawn to the Bithis is BAD and that's all there is to this.
Well. Not quite. Did get the chance to see this spectacle live and it's annoying, but I am drawn to the Big Emotions of live theater and also my best boy in the whole wide world Harry James Potter. He's absolutely darling to me at all ages and also incredibly sexy at 40. Leaving the three and half hour CONDENSED version of the show i thought: i can shave 30 minutes off of this by removing some of the overly dramatic Stage Performance of this, and also: if we have so much choreographed dance, I wish it was a musical. Alas.
But from a story level, it's deeply uninteresting to me. For one thing, it's a story that's fundamentally ABOUT how it sucks to be 15. Like. Yeah. We were all there. We were all 15 years old and it did suck. It was fine and sometimes super fun, but mostly it is just stupid hard to be a teenager, and while there are opportunities for stories about this to be profound and whatever, Harry Potter is not the place for this message. Like. It does suck, specifically, to be Harry Potter at 15 but OotP is not fundamentally about that, and Harry, in OotP had just. that was getting too long. in comparison albus is actually having regular teen age problems, so harry, who's life had basically been one unending nightmare after another for the first twenty years of his life is like "man. what is this kid's problem??" but mostly, it has left me wondering like, even if you're older brother is kind of a DICK the potter household is not some wildly dysfunctional hellscape they're all trying to escape, so JAMES POTTER the second should be in this play more. where is he? no where to be found. whatever but even if they had a more antagonistic relationship, it would have at least made the fact that albus feels like the "spare" in his family, both to harry and to the perfect son james, a little clearer.
other than that, the plot is thin and contrived and STUPID. no more voldemort love childs. or hate childs. no more stupid prophecies. no more time turners showing up magically to create and then solve the conflict. it has absolutely zero of the charm of harry potter, except it does have harry potter, who remains charming even when he's being a dick. ...more
