I found this really slow initially and probably wouldn’t have persisted if I wasn’t reading it for book club. Too much scene setting and not enough action. However, once the story got rolling, it became quite captivating and I enjoyed watching the twists and turns play out.
One criticism I gave though, is on re-reading the initial chapters from Percy’s perspective, his behaviours don’t ring true to me given he was in love with Isabel. I feel he should have experienced more grief and loss upon finding his lover dead. I realise Moreton didn’t want it to be obvious that they’d had an affair, but several of the descriptions in that chapter - such as when he’d seen Isabel with baby Thea - were too muted from my perspective.
All in all though, it was a very good story, with beautiful imagery, that kept me guessing throughout. ...more
