I hadn't heard about this book before Caffeine Tours gave me the chance to sign up for the tour. I hope that with this tour, more people discover and check out this book, because it's really good.
I'm going to discuss the things I loved about this book and the things I didn't like in this review. The good heavily outweighs the bad, so I'll start with what I loved: The Magic System: This book features a very interesting magic system. It gave me "Black Girl Unlimited" vibes in the sense that people's negative feelings are linked to the magic system. Without giving away too much, I'll say that when people have too many negative energy emanating from them, it leads to the creation of some evil creatures.
Mental Health Undertones: I really feel like this book is an important read on mental health. People's mental health is largely tied to these creatures that spring out, and they feed off negative energy. The hero, Hira, tries her best to talk to victims and help them understand that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but they have to make the choice to fight the negativity.
There's a lesson there: All through the book, we can see (as expressed by the point above) that we need to be better, not just for ourselves but for others. Be kind. Only Hira and a handful of other people can see this negative energy manifest, and others can't. As a result, they have no idea what the person is going through. This is true of us in real life. We have no idea what others are going through, so we should always strive to be kind. If you can't help or make things better, the least you can do is not make it worse. Don't be a bully, don't be an asshole, don't be mean or unkind.
Pacing: This book was very well paced, and there was hardly a dull moment. I like that it didn't have loads of filler pages, and every chapter moved things along. I didn't want to put this book down while reading because it sucked me in around 20% and it was an amazing ride. I was really invested in what was happening.

Now, on to what I didn't like: Lack of depth: A lot of things weren't really flashed out, and there were time jumps that led to major things happening, and I ended up not understanding how those things happened. Why do some people have powers and others don't? Why are powers different? Hopefully the next book offers more answers.
The characters: The characters really fell flat for me. As I read, I knew I had to root for the good, but the characters didn't stick to me and they were mostly annoying. Hira, the MC, was extremely judgmental of other characters. Even though she never said it to them and just thought it, I expected better from her seeing as she has powers that should make her be more emphatic.
Veronica: I really disliked the addition of Veronica's character in this book and omg, why? Her arc, her introduction, her entire existence. No, please.
