Although the multiverse is all the rage for both DC and Marvel right now, in 1985 the concept was more novel. How can Supergirl exist if Kal-El was the only survivor of Krypton? Every continuity discrepancy becomes easy to explain by simply saying it happened in a parallel reality. The DC universe became so entangled over the decades, that in the eighties Marc Wolfman was tasked with sorting things out. Along with George Perez, Wolfman throws DC characters from every time period and genre into the mix in a huge apocalyptic battle to save our positive universe(s) from the evil Anti-Monitor. And yes, there are casualties. I enjoyed seeing all of the old characters, but it was a bit too monumental, and many of the superhero names now sound laughably ridiculous. I'm sure I would have enjoyed this much more as a kid, or even in my 20s when these comics came out. ...more
