DefinitRead this along with 2BRO2B for a book club that decided to start with some short stories before we delved into a full length book next month. Definitely an interesting short story and I'm sure very forward-thinking for the time, but reading it now I would say it's just okay and I probably had a better time talking about it and expanding different areas of society he didn't touch on than I had actually reading the story. ...more

I actually skipped this short story the first time I read the series but I was told the Darkling was in it and because I am painfully predictable I decided to read it this time around. It's actually really impressive how much information she manages to pack into only about 4,000 words about both the Darkling and Genya. It's interesting to see why she 'chose' to do some of the things she did and how incredibly good he is at manipulating and using her. I think this is actually a really good piece to put between books one and two because his character gets *much* darker in the second book and this is kind of a good prequel to that and it also makes everything that happens to Genya in book 2 much more tragic as well. ...more

It was a cute enough little story but I just don't think I can accurately rate or review a book like this. Middle grade books can still be enjoyable to adults but this is literally just a 30 page picture book with a few sentences on each page. I will say the illustrations are really cute and several of them are a full two page spread so they have a lot of little details I think kids would really enjoying finding, but I just don't know how to rate how enjoyable this would be for a child so I'm gonna stick in the middle with 3 stars. ...more

I guess it might be more authorial intent or subtext that I missed than something that is explicitly on the page. In any case it's a nice little story and at around 9,000 also a quick read. ...more

Definitely not for kids just learning how to read in any case. It is a really cute and informative book though and even though it was meant for children I learned a lot from it as an adult as well. The story is framed with chapters about two children who are cleaning a house they're moving into while a man who was hired to help tells them about how various things around the house were invented by African American inventors. The entries about the inventors are framed as being written by the children after they did research on them and there are usually two shorter profiles [written by the sister] and one longer profile [written by the brother] in each section. Overall a really cute and informative book. ...more

This was a really fun and informative book. There were a few entries about people that I was already familiar with but a lot of the information was entirely new to me. I'm sure Shirley Jackson was a very innovative writer for her time but I just do not find a lot of things to relate to in her stories today, although they are still often enjoyable enough in a very middle-of-the-road kind of way.
I think it's hard to rate and review this story just because everyone already knows what it is about at this point before they read it. I can definitely see it being shocking and sensational the time of its publication but today stories like this have sadly become a bit of an over-used trope in my opinion. Still, it packs a lot of punch into only a few pages and is definitely an interesting read. I think I'm officially done with Shirley Jackson at this point but I am still glad I read the few works by her that I did, if only for the cultural context. ...more

I supposed this could turn into a decent story in the later volumes, but this first part does not really leave me wanting to read more. This is hard to rate because it is essentially an extended prologue with a huge time skip between the majority of it and the last 'chapter', which finally introduces Icarus briefly. I like the idea of Daedalus making automatons and taking a more steampunk approach to Greek mythology, but it seems like the author is taking a lot of what I would consider unnecessary liberties with certain people and events that I think would bother me a lot if I were to continue. Maybe I would have ended up liking Icarus, but none of the characters we've met so far really stand out or come to life as you are reading the story at this point. ...more

It's a quick cute read about a group of inter-dimensional explorers who go from world to world and map out major landmarks that are shared between universes and end up at the Flatiron building in our world. Not really long enough to merit a higher rating but as with all of Seanan's stories, she packs quite a bit into a short space. ...more
