Sidenote: I planned to read this for the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge 2016 (historical fiction set before 1900), but since I'll likely read another one in that category as well, I'm having it count for the Pop Sugar 2016 Challenge (book set on an island).
Super strong ladies, a vivid description of life on St. Thomas in the 1800s, some nostalgic images of Paris full of revolting workers -- so much love! Lots of drama with babies, birthing, and parenting, so that gave me all the tears as a pregnant lady. Overall, a compelling story about a time and place I've not spent much time pondering as well as a lovely view of the development of a familiar artist. And it made me hungry.
The audiobook was well done with three different narrators dividing up the different perspectives presented in the book. ...more
