No stranger to author P.S. Winn’s thought-provoking novels, her Sci-Fi adventure, ‘The Anomaly Project’ is astronomical in scope. Regarding the Sci-Fi aspect: Nell Hoover, an astronomer, discovers an anomaly destroying Horizon B, Earth’s viable alternate planet. The Anomaly Project begins, whereby she and Gary Sanford, a scientist from another observatory, team up with others at a NASA location, to pool their thoughts for preventing the anomaly from destroying Earth.
Plausibly intriguing in itself, the author also taps into down-to-earth aspects:
The budding romantic relationship between Nell and Gary. Nell’s jilted co-worker who can’t take no for an answer. A scientist on the Aspire Team who attempts to sabotage the destruction of KRAX, the anomaly.
I highly recommend ‘The Anomaly Project’ for its astronomical intricacies and warmhearted interactions between the two main characters....more

Author Sharon Mierke’s mystery, ‘Case Closed. Not’ is a jaw-dropping mystery. Not so much from high-stakes action, but from convoluted fragments private investigator, Beryl Swallow, pieces together from her deceased mother’s diary, along with faded photographs harking from the turn of the twentieth century. Apparently, her mother and father’s lives were shrouded in secrecy due to the elements of danger involved.
Oh, what a tangled web Rosa Emma Anderson (Swallows) aka Enricheta Rose Nicolai wove, including possession of a missing weapon. Beryl’s unraveling of her Italian and Irish ancestry is mind-boggling.
Also of interest, Beryl’s neighbor Sam and the development with his new wife, Sandra. If only Beryl reciprocated the romantic interest he’s always harbored for her, he’d have been spared humiliation.
The author’s easygoing first-person narration and witty dialogue frost the case. A highly recommended read! ...more

Author Christa Nardi pulls out all the stops with ‘Weekend Getaway, Another Murder’ (Book Ten: A Sheridan Hendley Mystery). When Sheridan and Brett rent a cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway, they come across an injured couple during a hike: Stacie Maroni and Michael O’Hare—Nardi’s characters who are crime solvers in their own right.
The murder of Joni Lynn Hardwell, a forty-six-year-old realtor, preoccupies Sheridan and Brett’s stay in Evergreen. Henceforth, the reader is drawn into the realism of painstaking and meticulous sleuthing to find a killer adept at covering his tracks. The author’s attention to details, in conjunction with her well-delineated minor characters giving the reader points to ponder, render this story a first-rate murder mystery.
The elements of danger are ever present as Sheridan, Brett, and Fabry try their utmost to pin a murder on their suspect, while appreciative of a good cup of coffee wherever their pursuits lead them.

Author Jeffrey Martin Botzenhart’s short story has the depth and character development of a novel. 'Sons of Eden' has the heart of Texas for all of the emotions it wrings out of the reader. The setting outside of Abilene near the rodeo where brothers Austin, Dallas, and Houston work off a debt incurred by their father, conveys the hard life and danger they’ve endured.
The author’s vivid descriptions, romantic sensitivity, dark secrets, social commentary, jaw-dropping and unpredictable turn of events, kept me turning the pages with tears in my eyes.

“Blade,” Part 3 of author Martha Perez’ paranormal romance short story series, is propelled by Blade’s love for Angel. Determined to save Angel and her family from Satan’s clutches on hell’s turf, Blade strikes up a bargain of ten-year duration.
When their false paradise comes to an end, the Devil takes all, leaving the reader eager to discover what transpires in the final chapter, “The King of Hell”.

Once more, author Jack Kregas, hits his stride in ‘Joey & Slick,’ another one of his top-notch crime fiction novels. Backstories about his key players: Joey, Slick, the Morettis—Renzo, Matteo, Stefano, and Sandra, as well as Native American tribesmen, Coyote and Johnny, add depth to the story without detracting from its unpredictable plot turns.
Brotherhood with bloodless ties and lifelong friendships impart heartfelt warmth throughout the story. Yet, make no mistake in thinking the author has gone soft on delivering slick justice to those who have it coming. No siree! To put it mildly, his methods of restitution are creative.
I highly recommend ‘Joey & Slick’ for its variety of admirable and despicable characters on opposing sides of what constitutes decency. ...more

Each short story in this collaborative anthology pushes boundaries in exploring “What If” to the fullest. Rather than rehash each offering clearly delineated in the synopsis, I prefer to commend every author for the fruits of their imagination. No two stories are alike in this smorgasbord replete with something for every reading palette:
Futuristic dystopia, time travel to ancient Rome, brotherly vengeance, the fragility of love, misplaced trust, crime prevention, a vindictive teacher, witching, pagan rituals, cheater’s remorse, and exploitation of human rights.
I highly recommend this well-written anthology where every story stands alone on its own merit. ...more

Author Beverley Latimer’s encompassing tale in the genre of Contemporary Literary Fiction is rich in detail and wrapped in emotion. The third-person narrative alternates between past and present, affording readers the omniscient viewing privilege of shadowing Emily throughout an unhappy childhood attributed to the abusive treatment she suffered from her mother. Readers witness Emily’s struggles for coming to grips with the past, while embracing loving relationships with her husband, children, and grandchildren in the present.
The unvarnished truth inherent throughout this heartrending story provides an emotionally moving reading experience. For me, Emily is a beacon of light and source of strength. I highly recommend ‘The Child at the Window’ for its authenticity in chronicling one woman’s indomitable spirit to triumph over her traumatic past. ...more

An avid fan of J.S. Frankel’s writing for his jabs at societal ills, ‘The Destiny Equation’ is no exception. Also of no exception, his uncanny ability to deliver relatable characters to teens and young adults, while unleashing his imagination to create fictitious scientific breakthroughs with sound logic.
Lydia Horiuchi and Jordan Maduro are the two front-and-center protagonists whose Gate-Maker gains them entry into the parallel universe of Earth Two and other portals during their harrowing, time-sensitive travels. Seems that Jordan’s unlucky stars have aligned him with the short end of the stick in the Destiny Equation defined by the Book of Prophecies, a guide for balancing out what happens in the world.
In an attempt to understand and test fate, he and Lydia seek truth with verification by consulting various prophesiers, some revered; others charlatans like those stereotypical gypsies with a gold-capped tooth who don’t exist on Earth Two. Those far more sinister do!
‘The Destiny Equation is fraught with danger and skepticism at every turn, culminating in an unpredictable, nerve-wracking ending. Highly recommended! ...more

Author Lorraine Carey’s novel in the genre of Time Travel Romance is “ablaze” with passion between groupie, Jennifer Kovich, and lead guitarist of a local band, Dylan Anderson. The author busts all the right moves bringing the Seventies alive through infusing the story with time-sensitive fashion, glittery makeup, a rooster-motif kitchen, muscle cars, strobe lights, and whatever rocked the era.
The edgy story featuring characters who step out of the pages and into the reader’s psyche, is fraught with suspense, danger, sinister motives, and heartwarming family dynamics. The concepts of time travel woven throughout are plausible and scientifically digestible.

It may be haunted, but ghost-whisperer, Ryan Marshall, uses his talent to persuade most of its spirit-dwelling occupants to move on beyond the veil.
Through the stories the spirits tell, and the newspaper articles written by old-timer, Grayson Marquette, the author weaves a tale delving into Montana’s mining history involving the exploitation of Chinese immigrants.

Author Beth Hildenbrand’s vivid descriptions and historical references build “The Laurels Creative Retreat” from the basement to the attic, granting the reader a solid foundation on which to stand and shiver in terror when the “spookies” make their presence known.
I succumbed to the retreat’s charm and became enamored with the characters. Some are there at random to engage their creative pursuits. Others have a bloodline connection which puts them in Abby’s path.
Judge and Jury, Terra, Layla, Perry, Eva, and Abby somehow develop lifelong familial ties through a friendship budding from an interest in getting to the bottom of where the tombstones grow.
If The Laurels were more than a figment of the author’s imagination, I’d reserve a room there. I highly recommend this Occult Horror novel teeming with charm and unease.

Remi, a sixteen-year-old suffering from juvenile psoriatic arthritis, has a near-fatal attack landing her at the hospital emergency room. In the cubicle next to her, lies Konrad, a teen clinging to life from the ravages of cystic fibrosis.
By medical error, Remi is injected with the “treatment” meant for Konrad. Nothing short of miraculous, her illness is cured and she has developed telepathic ability. Living in the same neighborhood, she and Konrad develop a friendship before he also receives the life-saving antidote.

Author Kristina Gallo’s self-help/satirical fiction with realistic relationship scenarios is an entertaining and thought-provoking read. While her sound advice should be common sense, love is often blind and blindsiding for one of the partners involved in a breakup.
As a result, she cautions against jumping out of a frying pan into a fire:
Don’t compare an ex-partner with a new prospect. Don’t embark on a new relationship with any of the ex’s friends or relatives due to the increased odds of coming into contact with the heartbreaker. Don’t seek a replacement for the false security of comfort.
As Gallo points out: in a perfect world, two people involved in a breakup would forgive and move forward, learning lessons and putting them into practice.

Author J.S. Frankel’s Teen & Young Adult Sci-Fi/Horror novel features protagonist, Loren Penner, a high school outcast beaten to a pulp on a regular basis by the “Unholy Four”. After one particular pummeling session, he’s locked in the town of Satan Crag’s library. A bookworm at heart, Loren comes across a satanic book of spells on the librarian’s desk. Without realizing it, he summons Jezebel (Jez), Satan’s half-mortal daughter from the netherworld.
What ensues is a spellbinding story about “pushing oneself to go beyond not only what you can do, but also what others can do,” words of advice from Jezebel who hasn’t had it so easy herself either downstairs or upstairs.
In Loren’s case, it’s also about staying true to his core beliefs without succumbing to the mindset of those who deserve his wrathful vengeance. With the help of the Book’s spells, Jezebel’s guidance—and, of utmost importancetaking care of business totally on his own, Loren gets ‘er done.
The author accurately portrays teen angst, the mindset of entitled bullies, a town with a hive-mind mentality and corrupt law enforcement officials who contribute to its resident evil. Add to all this, mind-blowing confrontations, jaw-dropping outcomes, and Satan making an appearance in Loren’s living room in the capacity of Jezebel’s doting father.
