Where the Tombstones Grow, is another great paranormal read from the pen of Beth Hildenbrand. I enjoy all of Beth’s stories, her writing style and choice of genre is something she excels in. I loved this story, Abby’s character is intriguing and keeps you interested to the end. For a great ghostly read with its own delicious happy ending, despite the unsilenced voices, this is the book to pick up. The retreat everyone would visit... Lol
Author Beth Hildenbrand’s vivid descriptions and historical references build “The Laurels Creative Retreat” from the basement to the attic, granting the reader a solid foundation on which to stand and shiver in terror when the “spookies” make their presence known.
I succumbed to the retreat’s charm and became enamored with the characters. Some are there at random to engage their creative pursuits. Others have a bloodline connection which puts them in Abby’s path.
Judge and Jury, Terra, Layla, Perry, Eva, and Abby somehow develop lifelong familial ties through a friendship budding from an interest in getting to the bottom of where the tombstones grow.
If The Laurels were more than a figment of the author’s imagination, I’d reserve a room there. I highly recommend this Occult Horror novel teeming with charm and unease.
I found it a little difficult to rate this book. I’ll go with 3½ stars. I may have pushed it to 4 stars, but there are so many typos that I ended up getting pulled out of the story on several occasions. The book would certainly benefit from a major edit. In itself, the story is engaging and the characters likeable, but it lost me a bit towards the end which is a shame because it has the potential to be a really good book and I’d been looking forward to reading it. It certainly sounds like a retreat I’d like to visit!
Beth Hildenbrand captures the reader right away with her interesting and colourful characters. The story flows well and keeps the reader guessing until the end. There are a few typos to overlook, nothing serious. If you enjoy the supernatural, you will enjoy this book. Well done Beth.
Two hard working ladies open a retreat for creative souls in an ancestral home: The Laurels. With mind-numbing amounts of energy they clean, cook, scrub and entertain the first round of guests but the spirit world comes knocking for Abby who has spiritual awareness and ancestral ties to the place. As various events not of this world unfold and secrets are uncovered, the women and five diverse guests become a family of sorts, attempting to unravel mysteries of the house and a mysterious link to a nearby village graveyard. Author Beth Hildenbrand has written a winner of a tale with a bright future and a happy ending as all is settled in this world and the next. Spooky but not hopeless situations abound, each bringing the rag-tag crew closer together. A story of learning of self for the managers and guests too!
