This series omnibus explores the depths and intricacies of humanity. What makes a beast and what makes a human? We’re taken along as Elin grows and learns, struggles and changes for ten years. She begins in a remote village—and where she ends up changes the history and future of the world.
A truly breathtaking marvel of work. The translation was clean with very little translator intrusion, maintaining the spirit of the original Japanese text. The characters are vibrant, but what really shines here are the character relationships. The many bonds formed between all the various creatures is so real.
By the end of the story you can practically hear the whistle of Royal Beasts coming from far off. ...more

I went into this one with high expectations thanks to the publisher’s preview. Turns out the preview was around the 70% mark. And that’s about when the book becomes interesting. The rest of it is a bit of scholarly “look what I know” with as many literary references and purple prose as possible.
A shame. The last twenty pages were fantastically exciting. ...more

However, I always prefer character story—so in that regard I felt it fell flat compared to the couples in the others.
I heartily await the next book and more answers, most of all—more of these characters I adore!...more

I’m not going to lie, for me the interviews became tedious and just took up pages and pages and pages. Pages o would have rather seen character sketches, early designs, storyboards.
I’m an artbook nerd, and the balance of this one feels very off. Mind you what IS presented is lovely. But a half page for some characters and then three-page back and forth interview transcript? As a book it very much could have been better balanced between words and art. ...more

Temeraire having been exhausted to me and Uprooted voraciously reread a good dozen times. And while Spinning Silver was great, it lacked that spark of magic to put it beside Uprooted.
Maybe it was too many first person narrators or the sudden romances that felt a bit forced. Whatever it was, Spinning Silver left me feeling full, but not exactly satisfied.
Still, Naomi is a masterclass wordsmith and her world is bright and real, as are the characters. There was such character depth and raw emotion in the first seventy percent of the novel, but the denouement felt hollow in comparison. Maybe it would have been better to fully flesh out a thick ending and split the book into two.
I still have so many questions left unanswered and so much I want to see.
Biggest peeve though? The decidedly not Jewish girl on the cover who looks nothing at all how Miryem is described. ...more

I devoured the first section in an hour, giggling at the tongue-in-cheek humor and quips. I adored Decibel Jones from the get go as would-be savior; Oort was a good backup; the Roadrunner everything I wanted in first contact from an alien species. Unfortunately, not all was well in the universe. There is, you see, too much of a good thing. And the quips and charming tongue in cheekiness became repetitive and--say it's not so--dull. I know I read about a lot of really clever alien species and their histories and their Grand Prix but I just don't remember any of it. A good fifty percent of the book is skimmable and has no real bearing on the story, which is a shame because it really is a good story. You just have to dig around and find the story and by the time you do you feel you've been bamboozled because there is so little meat available on the story bones....more
